SAHMs who have kids in preschool/regular school...

Does anyone else start to feel like a totally inept parent after having the kid(s) home during a break in school?

My kids were home from school for 3 1/2 weeks over winter break, and by the last week, my kids were whiny, demanding, hyper, and didn't listen to a word I said. I know it was because I was just so exhausted by the end there, we stayed at home for a couple of days with very little structure, and that always leads to trouble.  It doesn't help that I really don't have many friends here, so I was alone with them almost every day.  But holy moly, they were terrors.  It reminds me of how easily kids try to get away with murder if you relax the rules in the smallest way.  And then that makes me feel like an amateur all over again.

Today was their first day back, and I took the world's most awesome nap and then watched The Paper Chase while reading a baking book in my Snuggie.  Totally shirked all responsibility.  Tomorrow, back to reality!

  • I can totally relate!  We're still trying to get back into our routine.  My house is a mess, I am not into a rhythm with work and the girls are cranky!

We had a few weeks of no school preceded by being out of town without the kids, not working and illness and it's made all of us lazy and out of sync.  Hoping we'll be back on track in the next few days.

    Glad you enjoyed your day!

  • Yes, I feel ineffective and completely frustrated today.  I totally related to your post, and we only had a 2 week break.

This is our second week back at school and this morning was still really rough.  I sent Sarah to school with bedhead troll hair because I didn't have the energy to fight her about brushing it.  I screamed at Elizabeth for something truly minor, causing her to burst into tears.  I feel like every morning has been a series of battles just to get them dressed and ready for school.

I wish I knew how to make it go more smoothly.  My mouthy 4yo is driving me bananas!

Yes, they were crazy! Maybe I'm just... I dunno... conceited enough that I don't blame myself as much as I do the general lapse in routine. Both my kids are very routine oriented, not because of me but because of their personalities. THey thrive when life is organized and they know what to expect. So, not only were they home for 2 weeks, but we travelled and the holidays make it impossible to be sane and organized at home. I was so happy to have them go back to school- partially for selfish reasons of loving my alone time, but even more so because I knew that they (Whether they knew it or not) were going to be happier when things got back to normal.

And 3/4 year olds are their own brand of tiring...

  • Rayskit10, my kids are the same way about schedules.  Especially Sam.  I think that's why I feel like an amateur when I make the mistake of trying to wing it!

They've been back for one day, and they are already happier.  It's amazing.
