My mom (who is an Episcopal priest) thinks that we should avoid this name because Abel was killed by his brother Cain in the Bible. Do you think this is a good reason to not name our son Abel? Oh, just as a side note, he will have two older sisters but this is our last baby so he won't have any brothers!

Re: what do you think of when you hear the name Abel?
The first thing I thought of was "cain"
Me too! I can't believe no one mentioned this further up in the thread!
This....mmm Jax, I can't wait until SOA comes back on!
Haha. It makes me think of DH's fat plumber friend from back home who is obsessed with Star Wars. He has Star Wars tattoos, every replica light saber and toy there is from that series.
ETA- Correction- He isn't a plumber, he is a bug exterminator.

This. He was the one who gave the best he had to God so I don't see a problem with this. I find it interesting that the Priest thought that it was a bad choice just because he got killed. Many people in the Bible were killed but that doesn't reflect on their character.
No she definitely knows that he's was the good son, I think she just feels like it's a sad story for her grandson to be associated with or something!
He was the first murder victim in history. It just seems like a sad name to give a baby, IMO.
This exactly. Then I think of Cain and Abel. I love the name though, so neither would discourage me from using it. We are naming our son Morrison, and everyone always says "...after Jim Morrison". I usually just say "yeah, my role model", and walk away. lol. If you love the name, use it.
Same here.
