3rd Trimester

what do you think of when you hear the name Abel?

My mom (who is an Episcopal priest) thinks that we should avoid this name because Abel was killed by his brother Cain in the Bible.  Do you think this is a good reason to not name our son Abel?  Oh, just as a side note, he will have two older sisters but this is our last baby so he won't have any brothers!

Re: what do you think of when you hear the name Abel?

  • Cain, is what first comes to mind.  Secondly is a kid I went to school with who was always being asked 'are you able, Abel?'

  • I think of Cain and Abel but I can never remember who killed who so maybe it doesn't matter?

  • Cain. Personally, I wouldn't chose it. I suppose it's better than naming him Cain, however....
  • I think of Cain.  And I agree with PP... Abel is too much like Able.  Well, it is the same basically.  I see a lot of taunting and teasing through life.

  • i have a cousin named able and so thats what i think of he was a star baseball player in high school and college and now he is a successful owner of 3 resturants. So i think of success...

  • I think kindness and nobility when I hear this name.  I know that it's a name from the Bible, but that's not what comes to mind.  Name your baby what makes you happy!  I have already been shamed out of my number one pick and I wish I wouldn't have shared it until our little man arrived.  (People will give their opinion freely when the baby is in the womb, but once they are born and 'officially' named, it seems like no one ever comments negatively on the name.)  Hope you get what you want!

  • The first thing I thought of was "cain"

  • Clearly I'm not on the whole biblical train because I actually thought it was a really interesting name choice.

This....mmm Jax, I can't wait until SOA comes back on!

  • Haha. It makes me think of DH's fat plumber friend from back home who is obsessed with Star Wars. He has Star Wars tattoos, every replica light saber and toy there is from that series.

ETA- Correction- He isn't a plumber, he is a bug exterminator.

  • I do think of Abel from the Bible but he was the good son, a hard worker and very diligent. I think that would be a great name, IMO. No matter what you name your child, kids are going to find ways to pick on a name so I don't think that should be the only reason for not choosing a name.

This. He was the one who gave the best he had to God so I don't see a problem with this. I find it interesting that the Priest thought that it was a bad choice just because he got killed. Many people in the Bible were killed but that doesn't reflect on their character.

This! BF and I were seriously considering Abel as a name for our boy, but settled on something else. If you LOVE the name- then go with it! Don't let anyone else's opinion sway you out of a name. The only opinions that matter when it comes to YOUR baby's name are yours, and your significant other's! :)

No she definitely knows that he's was the good son, I think she just feels like it's a sad story for her grandson to be associated with or something!

This! But I LOVE the name, and if you do then use it!
  • i think of cain. but i plan on naming my son , if i have one in the future, Kane
  • Lurking from 2nd tri: I think of a local band called Cain Was Abel. I used to think of the biblical reference, though.
  • He was the first murder victim in history.  It just seems like a sad name to give a baby, IMO.

  • I'm not religious at all but the bible story is the first thing that comes to mind.

This exactly.  Then I think of Cain and Abel.  I love the name though, so neither would discourage me from using it.  We are naming our son Morrison, and everyone always says "...after Jim Morrison".  I usually just say "yeah, my role model", and walk away.  lol.   If you love the name, use it.

  • I taught a little boy from Ethiopia named Abel but it was pronounced A-bealle. He was a very smart, hardworking and absolutely adorable kid!
  • Cain and Abel.  Sorry, I didn't finish.  I think it depends on how you and your DH feel about name associations.  DH and I nixed Levi (a name we both really like) for that reason.
  • I just think of the Bible and it being very old fashioned (old being the key word) Sounds like a name for an old man
