Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Is DS too young to drop his nap altogether?

Today is day four (and third day in a row) that DS has not taken a nap. If he doesn't nap, he goes to bed at 8. He does not wake up early. He actually wakes up around 9. Amazing, I know.

I don't mind if DS doesn't take a nap, I just wish I knew if this was temporary or not. I thought kids usually take naps until they are in the first grade at least.

I am wondering if maybe this is a phase or not. Are any of your kids dropping naps?

  • Developmentally (it's what my degree is in), your son needs at least one nap. I wouldn't feel comfortable dropping it, but it's totally up to you!

That's my main reason for being worried about him dropping his nap. That is why I thought kids napped until at least first grade. But it's not like I can MAKE him go to sleep. Believe me I've tried. He just cries the whole time. Maybe it's just a phase and he will start taking naps again.

  • Kids typically drop naps altogether around 3 or 4. Some do it younger than others. I'd keep putting your LO down in the afternoons, 16 months seems really little not to sleep during the day.
  • i'm pretty sure kids don't drop a nap all together until they are 4 or 5 years old.
  • DD dropped her naps really early and never had a problem with crankiness. DS went through a phase before 2 y/o when he wouldn't nap and he was miserable at first. He has gone back to napping now thankfully. During the nap strike, I enforced quiet time where he layed on the couch with me in the room and I would not engage him. It allowed him to recharge a little even if he wasn't sleeping.

Your kiddo is getting more sleep without a nap then my do with a nap!  If 12-14 is sufficient, then with 13 he seems perfect.  If you wanted to play with it and get a nap, my suggestion would to be wake him 6:30 or 7 and then try to get a nap in.  But if he is not cranky or loopy, I'm not sure I'd mess with 13 hours.
