Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Cytotec - help! (warning: DS mentioned)

I had a D & C last friday and today I had a follow up ultrasound and its ALL still there, the fetal sac, placenta, everything.  Needless to say, I was very upset after my appointment.  So, my Dr. prescribed me cytotec and after everything I read on the internet about it, I'm so paranoid to take it.  I'm home alone tonight with my two sons (age 4 and age 3) and I have to work tomorrow.  My doctor wants to see me again on Thursday, but I'm wondering if I should wait to take these when my husband is home and I don't have to work the next day?  Anyone have any advice?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Cytotec - help! (warning: DS mentioned)

  • My only experience with Cytotoc was yesterday.  They had me put it in 4 hours before my D&C, get to the hospital 2 hours before, and then my surgeon was 30 min. late getting there b/c of a cesarean delivery.  In that time, I started cramping, light at first, (and I started bleeding) and then very, very badly.  By a few hours in, I was in excruciating pain and the IV painkillers the anesthesiologist gave me didn't help, even after 3 increases in dosage.  I thought I might pass out from the pain. Finally, they did my D&C after she arrived, and then it was much, much better afterwards.

I'm sure not everyone has the same experience, and I am so, so sorry about your D&C experience.  Based on my experience, I would definitely wait until your husband is home or someone else is there with you, just in case.

  • I am sorry for your loss and your experience with the D&C.

I think you should wait until your husband is home.  You don't need the additional stress of going through something like this at home alone with two little boys to watch after.

I had Cytotec during my delivery, but they used it in higher doses and I had an epidural in by the time the cramping became significant.

Cytotec can take up to 24 hours to work and you will need to not be at work.  Hopefully you were able to wait.  Best to you.
