1st Trimester

Gestasional Sac larger than fetus

Went for an U/S after several days of spotting brown blood. Not just once a day, but I've been wearing a pantyliner.  With my first child, 5 years ago, I did this the whole first trimester, and he was carried to term. I am 6 weeks pregnant.  Cardiac activity was seen at 132bpm. However, the sonographer mentioned that she was concerned because my gestasional sac was larger than expected. I don't know the measurement of either. She can't reveal too much info, so just waiting for my OB appt. next week, and then for follow up scans. If anyone has had this experience, I would love to know what the results were. Most of my internet searches suggest an ominous outcome.  I'm just saying my prayers.

  • sending good thoughts your way for good news from your doc.  sorry I don't have any wisdom to share.

  • I'm confused... You say the gestational sac was larger than the fetus. It always is. It has to be, in order to house the baby for nine months. Perhaps it was just slightly larger than the norm and everything will turn out to be fine. I certainly hope so.

  • You can see in my u/s pic in my siggy that my sac is bigger than the baby too. The doctor didn't say that anything looked unusual at my appointment.

    Good luck!

  • I understand that the sac houses the fetus, and that it should be larger. But, my guess is that maybe it's a ratio for the sonographer to be concerned.  Research suggests possible chromosomal abnormalities. She didn't say the yolk sac, she said gestasional. So I am quite confused.  I will keep an update after my next appointment. Thanks for the well-wishes.
  • I responded on PgAL too, here's what I said:

I think she probably meant that the gestational sac was measuring larger than the fetus.  Like, the sac was measuring at 8 weeks, and the fetus only at 6w5d, or something like that.

I had the opposite issue with my second loss, the fetus was measuring a full week larger than the gestational sac.  That ended in a m/c, but I'm not sure if the outcome would have been the same if the problem was reversed.

I agree with the PP that at 6 weeks it's hard to get really accurate measurements.  Everything might catch up.  GL.

  • No thought on this other than its not very fair of your OB to be making you wait a week for results that may be concerning. Baby blessings and prayers your way. I hope things turn out all right.

  • At exactly 8 weeks my baby was measuring 7w,3d and the sac was measuring 9w,1d. The doctor didn't seem too concerned. It is now 3 weeks later and everything seems to be fine so far. Those measurements aren't 100% accurate. Try not to worry too much about it.
  • Thank you ladies!
  • I am going through this right now and I am so scared. Sac is measuring 9w baby is measuring 6w and there is not a heartbeat. They said that they will look again in a week but to plan for a miscarriage. I am praying for a heartbeat next week
