Is this reflux?

Sorry for my ignorance, i dont go back to dr til february and this all just started, and i need to know if i should make a phone call to the dr.

The boys are choking more often during feedings.  Since we brought them home, it happened every once and a while but i thought it was cause they were preemies and still learning the suck, swallow, breath process...but now it's happening more and they are getting fussy during feedings and they werent doing it before. They are also starting to spit up more (i thought maybe i was feeding too much cause they are starting to wake up earlier 2-2.5 hrs instead of 3 and im still giving them the same amt)

I just read hopeful's reflux post and i started to wonder...

never read up on reflux...does it sound like this could be the problem?

Is it time to call my pedi?

Re: Is this reflux?

  • All those things are symptoms of reflux, but they also could just be some other random thing like not liking what they're drinking, or the bottle, or the time they're eating or whatever. It's so hard to figure out sometimes... Yes, it's time to call your pedi. : )

  • Reflux, in my experience, invovled LOTS of spit up, like the whole feeding would come back up, sometimes out the nose, sometimes looked like cottage cheese, followed by lots and lots of back arching and screaming.  :(  It was horrible!  Thankfully my son outgrew it pretty fast.  I pumped and thickened feeds from 1 month to 2 months, then I went back to nursing and things were better by then!  If you're concerned I'd talk to your pedi, it couldn't hurt.

  • yup, back arching and screaming (not terrible screaming and more one kid then the other)... i thought they were trying to push out a poo. i just fed them again and lessened their amt and slowed down the feed and no spit up but last night we were FF them and it was like puke fest and yes out nose too.  this two hour feeding schedule is terrible!!! i just cried the last one cause now its impossible to feed them at the same time...they choke too much

Hi mama, I just want you to know I feel your pain!!!  I had the same problem, and they are now on reflux meds, but I think our problem could have also been my forceful let-down!!!  Does the screaming happen about a minute into the feeding?  pull out your nipple and examine if the let-down is squirting out fast.  Maybe it's too much for them to handle.  I have to squirt milk into a wash cloth now at almost every feeding to make it easier for them to handle.

Neither of my boys spit up that much and one almost never spits up (he has silent reflux). Reflux babies certainly can spit up that much but not always : )

  • My son has reflux, but without a lot of spitting.  His food comes up, burns, and goes down, burning again!  Poor little guy.  He arches his back a lot, trying to keep it down and signaling his pain.  At times, we can actually hear the milk coming up (gurgle) and go down.  Our pedi said that it is hard to diagnose as same symptons can signal many things.  We were put on rice cereal at every feeding to keep food down, but he's still uncomfortable.  Yesterday he started on zantac... let's hope it helps!
