Cloth Diapering

How long do they last

This is my first time posting on this board and I've just started researching cloth diapers.  I just had a quick question...Do cloth diapers typically hold up for several years (so I can use them for our future children) or will I have to replace them with each child?

Re: How long do they last

  • Depends entirely on the brand.  Most go through at least 2 kids, though.
  • It depends on the size of your stash and the brand you use.

One sure thing is prefolds hold up. I know I will use mine with many subsequent children.

ETA: The same can be said for flip inserts.

Elastic, velcro and snaps on diapers wear out eventually but can sometimes be repaired.

ETA: It also depends on how you care for them. The quality of your elastics, velcro and pul can be somewhat preserved by hang drying your diapers and covers (not necessary for prefolds / flip inserts). And using the right detergents, etc.

  • Ditto PPs. It depends on the brand but most do. I wouldn't expect any cheap e-bady diapers to take you through many kids though.

  • The prefolds & covers I used in the NB stage are still in great condition and can definitely be used for at least one more and probably more.  We've been using the same 27 BG onesizes for over a year now and they are holding up great, when people see them they can't believe they are over a year old and each one gets worn about every other day.  I think they will definitely hold up for another, anything after that would probably need replacement elastic and velcro.
