Re: Spelling *Poll*

  • Aoifa. I posted a reply on your earlier post as to why I think no alternate spelling looks right. If anything, go with Eva.

None of those spellings looks like ee-fuh. Just go with the original spelling of Aoifa. Irish/Gaelic names are really coming into style now and are rather beautiful and unique. By spelling it wrong, you really downgrade the beauty of the original name.

    Agree.

I live in Boston, where people are pretty familiar with the more common Irish names. Changing the spelling would get the side-eye here, especially when the new spelling isn't all that pronounceable anyway. All of your choices look like EFF-uh, not EE-fuh.

Ditto this! The alternatives you have are bad!

  • I'll add that spelling into the poll. I just don't see the pronunciation of "EE-FA" in that. The first time I saw it I thought it was A-OIFA haha or something else. Maybe I just need to write it out and look at it.

I don't think that writing it out will help that much. It isn't an English name, so English phonetics don't really apply. Irish has different sounds.

    Example: Caoimhe is pronounced KEE-vuh

  • Okay I think you all convinced me haha now I just have to convince my husband. I guess your right, if we're going with an Irish name we shouldn't change it! Thanks guyss!!!!!

Totally agree with this post. EVA is gorgeous. And sounds a lot better than Efa. Efa is just wayyyyy too different.

  • its pronounced ee-fah? All the spellings you suggested look like F- ah

I see a lot of issues when the baby is in middle school...
