NBR: Possible relocation to Baltimore

Hi ladies,

My DH has a possible job opportunity in Baltimore. It's really in the early stages, but it doesn't keep me from wondering about finding a place to live.

Does anyone have suggestions on areas to consider or stay away from?

Thanks!

Shannon

Re: NBR: Possible relocation to Baltimore

  • You may want to take this question over to the Baltimore Board on The Nest.  It's a little more active and this question came up recently and got lots of responses from various ladies (not that the ladies here aren't helpful, it just seems to be quieter).

Things to consider, whether you keep the question here or post it there:

Do you know where in Baltimore his job would be?

Are you interested in city, suburbs, or more rural?

  • Thanks, I will do that as well.

He would be working on N. Calvert Street (Baltimore Sun) and I only know that from looking online. I have no idea where that is compared to anything else.

I would probably say the suburbs, but am not 100% sure.

    I appreciate your help!

  • Avoid: Dundalk, Arbutas, Landsdowne, Security...places that are family friendly and have good school districts:  Howard County (Ellicott City), Catonsville (Baltimore County)-a south of the city... Perry Hall (Baltimore County), Bel Air (a bit further from the city-45 min but I've love living in Harford County and don't mind the commute)-all north of the city.

When we looked for places keep in mind the closer you are to Baltimore and/or DC the more expensive it is...we kept north of the city and found it more affordable which is why we chose Bel Air/Forest Hill...GREAT school system and is worth the extra miles to Baltimore.

let me know if you have any more ?'s!

  • The Sun is on the north side of the city, so you may want to look in the northern suburbs.  I would suggest:

Northern Baltimore County: Cockeysville, Towson, Perry Hall, Nottingham, White Marsh

Western Harford County: Jarretsvillle, Abingdon, Bel Air

Eastern Carroll County: Hampstead, Manchester, Westminster, Upperco (Upperco actually stratles the Carroll County/Baltimore County Line)

  • I used to work in the city and live in Annapolis, MD.  The tricky thing about Annapolis is while it is a beautiful place the bad neighborhoods are right next to the good.  The good neighborhoods are very expensive (I thought I had a nice place until I had a rock thrown through my window).  I LOVE Annapolis, but I would do lots and lots of research before moving there.  I just moved to Bel Air MD and I feel much safer.  I love the school system.  Just my thoughts. Good luck.
  • I feel that's how a lot of Ann Arundel county is...maybe with the exception of Severn and Serverna Park...but they are very expensive!

  • I live in Annapolis - about 3 miles from City Dock. I LOVE the small city feel, but agree with the neighborhoods. We've been looking to rent our condo and buy a house and it's been very hard to find that right neighborhood that's in our budget. Also, you need to watch the school systems in Annapolis and in Anne Arundel County. Obviously if you want private school, than it's not an issue. I grew up on the water up North, so I love being steps from the water and all that Annapolis has to offer and the proximity to DC/Baltimore/Eastern Shore.

    Good luck!!

  • Dh and I are sort of new to the Baltimore area and have lived in Owings Mills, White Marsh and, now, Abingdon/Bel Air.  Owings Mills was closer to work for him (he works in the city too) but we didn't like the area and the beltway (695) is a pain in the butt in the mornings.  We liked White Marsh but weren't in love with it.  We bought a house and moved to Abingdon in April and LOVE it.  We love our neighborhood, are around a ton of shops/restaurants (was the same in Owings Mills and White Marsh too though) and are in a good school district.  Dh doesn't mind the commute in on 95 either so that's a plus too.

  • we live in Sykesville in Carroll county and DH commutes to Baltimore it's about 45 min but the school system is great and we could afford a house with land here. It's worth the drive.  I am originally from Annapolis, it's beautiful but expensive. My mom is a real estate agent in Annapolis and a great person to pick her brain if you need to she's been in Annapolis for over 30 years and knows the surrounding area really well.  You could ask her about the price of houses and rentals in the area.  You can PM me and I can give you her info.  Good Luck!!
