Do You Give LO Juice?

I was just wondering how many of you give your LO juice. What kind and how much do you give them?

Re: Do You Give LO Juice?

  • No way. I barely give it to my two year old. Its just sugary crap they dont need.

  • No. I see no reason to introduce DS to all that sugar and empty calories. We'll be reserving juice for special treats.

  • I give DS pear juice if it seems like he's having trouble pooping.  I have no intention of giving it to him otherwise until he's older.

  • We never did juice with DD and still really don't - she eats SO MUCH FRUIT and doesn't really even like juice.  We are def more water drinkers.  It irritates MIL that we don't give the kids juice, but like previous post says, most is just sugary crap anyways. On the occasion we might buy juice we make sure it is 100% juice at least.

  • Yes, I give him Pear Juice (100% juice, no sugar added). I mix it 70% water, 30% juice, give it to him in his sippy and only at meal times. It helps him stay regular (otherwise, he has a really hard time pooing) - well not tonight (see bathtub post in 9-12), but normally he does. :-)

  • We've tried in our attempts to get her to take a bottle. No luck.

  • Nope.  There's no need to.

This. Although now that she takes a sippy cup I may give her tiny amounts of prune juice when she gets constipated.

  • I don't plan on giving it to her ever.  I know realisticly she will get it at other people's houses or birthday parties, but she won't have it at our house.

  • yes we do apple and white grape and we do full strength because our pedi has us giving dd as many calories as we can even if it is empty calories. dd hasnt gained any weight in about 2 months
  • I do.  My pedi okayed it at her 2 month appt, but I never gave it to her.  I didn't introduce juice until we started BLW at 6 months.  The pedi mentioned it again at the 6 month appt, and I said I wanted to save it for a special treat.  She said that was great, because juice is Coke for babies.

About once every other week, she gets a sippy cup with a 1:1 mix of water/apple juice, and yesterday I gave her cranberry juice/water mixed 3:1. She loved it.  I only buy 100% juice with no added sugar.  And the sippy is never more than half full.

  • We do rarely  for occasional constipation.  DH and I drink vegetable fruit blends only (not that the rest of our diet is stellar).

Honestly though, juice isn't THAT far removed from purees - nutrition wise. Both have had the fiber pulverized out of them, the calories in both are super easy to process and aren't useful for long term energy and both are high in fructose (a naturally occurring sugar in fruit)

I was thinking the exact same thing.

  • I just googled the nutritional values in baby apple juice vs baby apple puree (same serving size and brand). The juice had twice as much sugar and FAR less vitamins.
  • I was giving DS a little juice. I would mix juice with water. I did 50/50 when we were trying to get DS to learn how to drink from a sippy cup. He wouldn't even get 2 oz of juiced every other day. He had a really bad yeast diaper rash and I believe it came from the apple prune juice he was drinking. He hasn't had any since that. H0

Yeah, I don't think apple puree and apple juice would be the same thing at all.

Juice is unnecessary for a baby's diet, so no, I won't be giving juice to my LO, or any other sugary drinks.

I have to disagree with this. When you puree something, you're not taking any fibrous material out of it. If you puree an apple, for example, you're feeding it to your LO as if it's already been chewed. They're still getting all apple sans skin, but skipping the chewing process. this is not the case with juice which takes all fibrous material out.

  • Aren't all of these baby snacks like arrowroot cookies, mum mums, puffs, etc.. empty calories?? Just asking....

Yes, the babe gets 2 oz a day dilluted with 3 oz of water. Drinks apple, white grape and pear.

I'm assuming she meant store bought puree vs. homemade.
