I also think that Nona sounds like a nickname for Grandma. It was also the name of the girl from Hell's Kitchen. I would never use it just for that reason because I was not a fan of that girl lol.
lurker - I know an adult Nona, I think it's cute if you like it! Nona is only for a grandmother in certain cultures, mine's called Bubbie so I wouldn't think otherwise.
Like pps, I think of a grandmother. I also have a really hard time with number names, in general. DH has one and is always asked if he is the xth child in his family.
I thought Nona was a nickname for Grandma (like Granny, Mimi, etc.). It's a cute nickname (even for a kid), but I don't like it as a "real" name.
I agree. The grandchildren call DH's mom Noni (except for DS who calls her Ahma because that's what he insists on calling her). I really like Nora though!

Yep, Nonna is grandma in Italian! For that reason, I'd skip it
This. I'm Italian and we call my grandparents Nonna and Nonno so I wouldn't be able to use this as a name. Plus, it's just NMS. I like the name in your siggy!
Re: What do you think of the name Nona
My thoughts exactly. It also reminds me of Latin class and girls often being named what number child they were.
Haha, ditto the others - I just think of a Grandma when I hear Nona. It's also kind of tongue-twisty.
Stick with Evelyn.

Apparently, someone liked it. This was just posted on Appellation Mountain yesterday: https://appellationmountain.net/2011/01/08/reader-baby-name-story-a-number-a-memory/
Personally, I really, strongly dislike it. The AM post did make me see it in a new light, but not enough to actually say I like it.
My Grandma's name is Nona ( real name, not nickname for "Grandma"). It also makes me think of the childrens story Strega Nona.
I agree. The grandchildren call DH's mom Noni (except for DS who calls her Ahma because that's what he insists on calling her). I really like Nora though!
This.
Did you see it on Appellation Mountain too?

Nona is "grandmother" in Italian.
NO, NO, NO, NO!
