So, I have an alternative that has really been working for me. I am using a midwife and when my constipation was so bad (in tears it was so bad), she suggested that my magnesium intake was too low. She recommended up to 1000mg/IUs of Magnesium per day. Sure enough... it works! Honestly, for me it worked better than the colace.
I now take 2 Magnesium supplement pills (500mg) and have been pretty regular. YAY! Sweet relief!!
I am not sure what peri-colace is...but mine is just Colace from CVS. I take 2 in the morning, and depending on how the day goes maybe one more before bed!
I agree with PP, lots of water with that too!
The Colace helped a lot....I'm afraid to stop taking it, and the doctor said I don't have to!
Anyone have EXTREME constipation? I am still on zofran and I'm in a lot of pain. TIA!

COFFEE!!!! Seriously, I don't drink a lot of coffee but on days when it is bad, I go get a McDonalds iced vanilla coffee...I don't even have to drink all of it...but about a half hour later, I am all good. My hubby will laugh at me because I will look at him and tell him in is a 'vanilla coffee' day!!!!
I had extreme constipation issues before I was pregnant (not now because I'm hyperthyroid so everythign is moving pretty well) - so extreme it was 1 BM per month and 2 trips to the hospital. What I learned - lots of water, raisin bran cereal, fiber one bars (they're SO good too!), and grape juice. Also, regular movement keeps the digestive tract moving so make sure you're not being a couch potato!
Thank you for all the great advice! I am so desperate and my dr's only advice was 1 senecot or one colace before bed. I will be chugging water, sipping coffee, taking a magnesium pill, etc. More excited than I've been in a long time...this is pretty sad
Wake up in the morning and drink a large cup of hot water with the juice from half a lemon mixed in. Works every time. Also helps a ton to eat fresh fruit like apples, pears, kiwi- they have a ton of fiber and also some water. You could also try Activia yogurt. The extra water is a must! Fiber and water!!!!
I struggled with this early on (along with diarrhea, ugh), and still do. First the nurse at the doctor's office told me to take Colace 1-3 times a day along with a dose of Milk of Magnesia before bed. She also said to stop taking my PNVs until things got regulated (the iron is constipating). The milk of mag made me super gassy, but I usually got relief the next morning.
At my next appt, the doc said to switch to Miralax and to take it everyday. That stuff is expensive and there's no way I could take it everyday. However, it did seem to work a lot better and more gently than the milk of mag, so I use it occasionally (my advice is to mix it with 100% fruit juice and chug it down before bed).
Now that I'm able to eat better, I've made sure to get my fiber (oatmeal, yogurt, lots of fruits and veggies) and plenty of water, and that has seemed to help.

Probiotic yogurt, its been my BFF this pregnancy. And plenty of liquids. Main one when I am really constipated is this organic apple juice that still has the pulp in it. Works wonders. Plus with the yogurt I get the smoothie kind so it's kinda like a fun snack and I get my calcium too
I take 2 colace at night before bed (not peri-colace, because it is a stimulant and can cause contractions). Other than that I drink plenty of water and sometimes some metamucil in the morning. Also try fiber rich foods and Plumsmart Plum or Prune juice. And lots of yogurt. I add some granola to my yogurt to make it extra yummy!
I wouldn't say mine is extreme but since getting on (and staying on) zofran I've worked hard to not let it get out of hand. First drink lots of water, eat fiber bars (I like fiber one), drink Fiber mixes, eat whole grains and spinach. Working out, lightly, will keep things moving too.
Oatmeal and lots of water help for me, but its hard for me to make myself eat oatmeal everyday because I ate it everyday while bfing DD to help keep my supply up.
I ate the fiber one bars when I was pg with DD and they helped a lot. Also coffee. I mostly drink decaf when I'm pg or bfing, but if I'm backed up I will drink a cup of reg coffee and it gets things moving.

I was just going to post the wonders of Fiber One's poptarts! Pop Tarts caught my pregnant eye at the grocery store and I opted for the Fiber One version to be healthier. I have to limit it to half of one tart or I will have some serious issues. Fiber one products are actually tasty and pretty gentle.
When I was constipated I did a combo or upping my water intake, taking colace, and eating some fiber one stuff
Re: what works for you? (constipation)
DD due April 2, 2014
Thanks! I take peri-colace sometimes, but only one before bed. Is it peri-colace?What time of the day do you take them?
