the world would be a lot simpler.
DD came running in to the kitchen to ask if I knew there are black people in Michigan. (The news was on in the other room so I can only imagine she had seen something related to race on tv) I said, yes I was aware, and told her, "As a matter of fact, your friend, Mia, is black." She look completely confused so we had the talk about how skin comes in all different colors. I asked DD what color she had thought Mia was and she told me, "skin colored."
Then DD said, "Mia's dad isn't black, though, right?"
"No, he's black, too. He's just a different tone"
So then DD asked, "Am I white?"
"Yes, you are."
"I don't look white!"(said while studying the skin on her arm)
"What color do you look?"
Said with exasperation, "I look skin colored!"
DD is very confused because people are neither Crayola white nor Crayola black. As far as she is concerned, it's all just skin colored so she's not understanding why people are labeled black and white.
She's wise beyond her 4 years.
