Recipe help/substitution

So I put B for a nap, and I was all excited to make some chocolate chip cookies. I have a box mix, I know not the best but good enough for me! It calls for 1 stick of butter and I only have about 3/4 a stick. Should I make them anyway? Will they be any good? Can I substitute something?! All I wanted was a damn cookie.

Re: Recipe help/substitution

  • If it were me, I'd go for it.

But if you have it you can sub applesauce for butter.

  • I do have apple sauce. Should I use the butter I have and some applesauce? or just apple sauce?

  • I'd go all applesauce.  You may have to google the equivalents applesauce to butter.  I don't know what they are.

  • applesauce shouldn't be substitued for butter, only oil. And it doesn't really work in a cookie. You probably don't have margarin or crisco, do you?

I 100% disagree.  Applesauce is actually a great substitute (and a secret weapon for many) for butter and oil that greatly reduces the calories and fat of the resulting dish.

You could use the 3/4 of the stick of butter you do have and add 1/8 of a cup of applesauce or just go ahead and use a half cup of applesauce and omit the butter all together.

FWIW, I often sub applesauce for butter and oil in baked goods and DH actually prefers the applesauce version almost all of the time.

ETA: I have never been able to taste the applesauce in anything I have ever made with it.
