Trouble TTC

TTC

Ok, I'm 34 and TTC.  In my previous marriage I had 2 children, my first child passed away at 1 year and 4 days.  My second child is now almost 9 years old.  I have recently gotten re-married and we would like to have a baby.  We have been together for four years and have not used birth control.  At the beginning I was on the Depo Shot, but for only 3 months and since then I have had my cycle on time every month.  My first two children are 4 years apart.  With my first there was no problem getting pregnant...but it did take 4 years to conceive my second.  So I guess my question is since we haven't gotten pregnant should we go to a fertility doctor?  We are both healthy, don't smoke and don't drink.  He has recently switched to boxers after wearing boxer briefs but I wouldn't think that that would be the issue.  I just don't know what to do.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Re: TTC

  • Have you talked to your OBGYN? Most of the time it seems that they can do the inital testing, and if there are problems they can refer you out to a specialist. If you have been trying for 4 years, then something is probably not quite right.

  • I would get things checked out.  I initially did testing with my OB, but I don't really recommend it.  She didn't think there was a problem and only referred me to an RE at my insistance.  I had high FSH and she didn't think it was a problem because she saw a lot of AFCs.  However, I went to an RE and found out I have DOR and there could not have been as many antral follicles as my OB counted.  Plus, many REs will redo the testing.

    Good luck!

  • Hello :) I just asked some of these same questions to my OBGYN and I was told that they don't really refer you to a specialist until it's been about a year of TTC on your own. It is frustrating, I know, but stay positive and good luck!

  • First, I want to say I am very sorry about your first child :(
The "trying for a year" isn't really a once size fits all kind of thing.  If you haven't been on birth control for 4 years and haven't gotten pregnant during that time AND it took 4 years to conceive your second, it's safe to assume something is going on. I wouldn't bother with an OB if you don't have to, I'd go straight to an RE and get some initial testing done for you and your H.  Good luck to you!
