She had a reaction a while back, just before Christmas, a few hours after trying grapes for the first time. She was covered head to toe in a horrible hive-like rash for 3 days. She was also on Amoxicillin at the time though, and the ped said it was more likely the medication causing the reaction, not the grapes.
We still decided to hold off until she was much older to give her grapes again, but last night my aunt stuck one in her mouth when I wasn't looking (she was not aware of the possible allergy). This morning she is sick to her stomach, whiny, clingy, and her nose and cheeks are bright red and hot. I called the ped and they seem to think it is the grapes. Poor baby girl.
Do any of your little ones have a grape allergy? I have never heard of any one I know being allergic to grapes.
Re: Looks like Amelia is allergic to grapes :(
My BIL is allergic to fresh, uncooked fruits. But he can have things like grape jelly and raisins. There are also some fruits that he can eat if he peels them.
I haven't tried grapes with Asher yet, but he does have quite a few severe allergies. For the hives....if she still has them, believe it or not...cool compresses will help. Also Aveeno makes a baby line and their lotion is amazing. G/L
Thanks for the tips. Now Im starting to think I should have her allergy tested. It sounds like most people who are allergic to grapes are allergic to other fruits as well. I googled and found that peaches could be a concern too. She tried pureed peaches once with her and they upset her stomach.
Its a good idea to get her tested. I just want to warn you than allergy skin testing is not very accurate in young children. You get a lot of false negs. I would wait until at least a year and then demand corresponding blood tests for specific allergies...like grapes, pears. Basically you're looking at anything that has seeds or a pit on the inside. that also have an edible skin. So Pears, Apples, Cherries, Peaches...)
Thank you so much for your advice. I remember reading some of Asher's story, and I just checked out your blog. Seems like you have to know quite a bit about these things. I'm glad Asher is doing well, and I wish you luck in the future as you introduce him to new foods. Just having a bad hive reactions was scary enough, I can't imagine what you must have felt when he reacted to his formula.
