For those of you that use sound machines when putting LO to sleep

For any of you that use any sound machine or music for your LO when putting them to bed at night... do you leave the machine on all night- or do you wait for them to go to sleep and then turn it off? Does anyone know if it makes a difference? I have been playing an ocean sound and then when she falls asleep I turn it off, because I am afraid she will get used to this sound and need it to sleep. does that happen?

  • When we first started using it I left it on all night.  But in teh past couple of months I will turn it on during the bedtime routine and set the timer to turn off after an hour.
  • Loading the player...
  • Ours has a setting to shut off automatically after 15 min, 30 min, or 45 min.  We used to set it to go off but now it runs during her whole nap time or all night long.

I'm not sure if she "needs" it to stay asleep or not but I think it helps drown out other sudden noise that might wake her otherwise.  I guess I'm not willing to take that chance finding out if she needs it or not so it stays on now :-).  It does travel with us to grandmas house...

I do use different sounds for naptime vs. nighttime in hopes of distinguishing the two. (song during the day, heartbeat at night)

  • We leave it on all night. I noticed that when I turned it off he would stir or wake up very soon after.
  • I always leave it on, but I have no problem with him getting used to it to sleep. In fact, I know he is used to it and it soothes him. I know so many adults that need fans or other white noise to sleep that I don't think this is so weird. Also, he is somewhat of a light sleeper, but with the white noise we can clank stuff around and it buffers other sudden noises.

  • We leave it on all night for many of the same reasons as the poster above me stated.

  • We leave it on because our idiot dog likes to bark at everything and nothing all night long.

  • I leave it on all night.  DS still uses one, DD now uses one, and I just bought myself one too.  Once DD left our room I missed it. I don't know if it makes a difference but I like it to drown out the sounds in our house.  The dogs make a ton of noise and do does DH when he gets up for work.
  • Ours is fairly quiet, but we leave it on at night.  It seems to help.

  • Our is just a white noise and it's on our old alarm clock and we leave it on all night.  Our rooms our close together and the doors/floors squeak and creak and I am afraid it will stir her and wake her up.  She could probably sleep through a tornado really because she slept in my mom's arms on Christmas with all the rukus going on so I know she could.  She also slept through a horrible hail storm when she was only a month old that could have woken the dead and some bad thunder so she can sleep pretty much anywhere...we just like to have it to drown out all the craziness at night.
  • I started to use the sound machine for Ella, but now I can't sleep without it!  So it stays on all night.

  • We actually have 2. DS needs music to fall asleep on his own. We have a noisemaker that plays lullabies for 12 min and then turns off. After that we leave a white noise maker on making wave noises all night.
  • Ours turns off after a half hour.
