Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Has anyone had 2 miscarriages back to back

My first pregnancy in 2007 was great! No complications! At 21 years old I delivered a perfectly healthy 8 lb 6oz, 21 inches long, baby girl at 39 weeks. At my six week check up my doctor recommended the Implanon that he inserted that day. In July 2010 I had it removed so we could try for number 2. I found out in mid October i was pregnant and by the end of the month i miscarried. My doctor told me i needed to wait atleast 3 months before trying again. The very next month in November i didnt start my period and took a test and got a BFP. My doctor was seeing me every 2 weeks for ultrasound and at 8 weeks he noticed a blood clot in my uterus. I carried the baby until friday at 10 weeks i miscarried. This is 2 miscarriages back to back. Has this happened to anyone else? I now wonder if we will ever be able to have another. Did the blood clot cause this problem...Is there something genetically wrong...Did i miscarry the 2nd baby because my uterus wasnt recovered from the previous miscarriage and needed more time to heal...so many questions...I am scheduled for a D&C tuesday if everything hasnt passed, but how do i know what to look for?

Re: Has anyone had 2 miscarriages back to back

  • While I didn't m/c back to back month wise, I did have a miscarriage in June and currently waiting on one.  My blood work shows that I only ovulated in May and then again in December when I finally gave into Femara.  So it is was my first cycle where I could actually get pregnant so it is kind of like back to back miscarriage.

My blood does clot a lot and I have to be on Lovenox (blood thinner) while pregnant to prevent them and to help prevent a stroke (I had 2 mini strokes years ago).  Have you spoken to your doctor about being on an aspirin or testing to see if there was a reason for that blood clot?

When I passed everything in June, it was a large amount.  I actually had to pull it out of me because it was hanging out.  Sorry it tmi.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

  • Im so sorry! This baby making business can be heart breaking! I plan on speaking with my doctor more in the AM but i havent had bleeding like you were referring to this time. I want him to do an U/S and see if there is visible tissue that is still in there. I have no problem with a D&C but only if its really really the only option. Best wishes to you.

  • I have not had 2 but wanted to say that I am so sorry for your losses!  And welcome to the board!  I agree with the PP's that you should talk to your doctor about some testing and about using some kind of Birthcontrol so your body has time to heal this time before getting PG again.

  • I haven't had 2 m/c back-to back but wanted to say I am sorry for your losses.  My cousin had 3 m/c before delivering a healthy baby girl.  Her dr told her to take baby aspirin.  She did for 38 weeks with her daughter.  Then she had two more m/c after her daughter was born (for some reason she didn't take the aspirin).  She got PG again and took baby aspirin for 35 weeks and delivered a healthy baby boy this past Nov.  Dr. realized she was clotting making her m/c.  I would definitely talk to your dr. but with the clotting maybe the aspirin would help.  GL to you and welcome!

I am sorry for your two losses.

I would not necessarily assume that getting pregnant so soon after a m/c is the reason behind your most recent loss...

My mother's husband's son's wife (ah, families of the 2000s!) has a miscarriage and not a month later she was pregnant again and had the most beautiful baby girl 9 months later!  I would talk to your doctor and see what he or she believes was the problem.  So sorry for your losses :(

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.

I'm going through my second consecutive miscarriage in five months (waiting for it to happen).  I haven't had any issues with blood clots, but my doctor has been trying to convince me that I just fall into the unfortunate 10% of the population that has two consecutive miscarriages, and most likely nothing is wrong with me.

I know it's really hard to find comfort in this.  Hopefully you can get whatever testing you need to help you move forward.

  • I'm so sorry for your losses.  I had an uneventful pregnancy in 2008 resulting in my son, and then two m/c back to back - one in June and one in November.  The genetic testing on the June one showed no chromosomal defect (so we'll never know the problem) but the one in November showed an unbalanced translocation.  My husband and I had our chromosomes tested and they came back fine, so that was a genetic fluke.

I had two D&Cs because my body didn't realize the embryos had stopped developing.  I hope yours goes smoothly and you recover quickly.  My doctors recommended waiting until I got my period before we TTC again and we took that advice, and actually waited longer so I was confident my body was back on track.  Unfortunately, that still resulted in another m/c.

I hope you don't mind my responding.  I am so very sorry for your losses.  I had a loss last December, found out that I was pregnant again in April and lost that baby in June.  Both of my losses were not due to chromosone abnormalties and although many doctors have many ideas I will never know for certain why they died.

A blood clot could cause you to miscarry.  Is your doctor willing to do repeat pregnancy loss testing on you?  I would definitely ask for that and hopefully that will provide you with some answers.  Additionally, you could look into testing for immune issues that may cause miscarriages.  It's not uncommon for some women to have one or two healthy pregnancies and then have something go haywire and they are unable to maintain future pregnancies.

I'm not a doctor but I wouldn't think you lost the second baby because your uterus hadn't recovered.  My doctor didn't really give me a waiting time after my miscarriages and I guess I've always figured that if your body wasn't ready for another pregnancy that you wouldn't get pregnant.

I know it's so hard to have so many questions with no answers.  I hope your doctor is able to at least give you some answers and some peace of mind.

Again, I'm so sorry for your losses.

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
