does part-time childcare for an infant exist?

I am having a hard time finding part-time childcare for my second baby.  I would rather not go to an in-home daycare setting b/c we had a bad experience with that with our first child.  But I don't think I have other options.  Do you know anything about this?

Re: does part-time childcare for an infant exist?

  • My DD is at a school-like center, and they offer FT and PT. They have ranges of hours, my DD goes for 40 hrs a week. I'm not sure of the other ranges, but say I needed 16 hours a week - I might have to pay for 20 hrs but it's not like I'd have to pay for 40.

Is it that centers don't have the space, or are they telling you there is no part time option?

  • in the baby room - there was even one "Drop In' baby - he was hardly there and they paid by the hour only. I would assume it was $11/hr - because that's the rate when you are late to pick up your child.
  • they tell me it's not even an option.  I asked if I could pay a daily or hourly rate and they said no.  I called 5 so far and got the same response....I'm sure you know, there are only so many child care centers that are conveniently located b/w work and home.  I'll have to explore the in-home setting.
  • I am so surprised! This was an option everywhere we looked.
  • We found a center that took my DS three days a week (and we only had to pay for those three days).  Just keep looking/calling.
  • Church daycares often offer part time.  Our center doesn't offer part time, but you can pay by the day *if* they have space.  But it's not guaranteed.

  • Around me for infants no, for toddlers and up yes. They are required by the state to have a 'personal' crib for the entire week for infants where toddlers and up sleep on cots.

  • The only part time I have found start at the age of 18 months.  Before 18 months it is full time only.  the places that do part time at 18 months start taking as young as 6 weeks old.  Good luckl.  I hope you live in a big city.

  • All of the daycares I've looked at in CO are full days. You can select specific days to go on, but you pay for the entire day.

  • Most of the ones I looked at were full time only.  I only found a couple that did part time. And the amount it cost for part time was not proportional, so it was pretty expensive for the little amount of time.

  • I only found 1 place in our city (Austin) that offered part time for infants and I didn't like the center otherwise, so it was a no go.  Lots of places seem to offer part time starting at 12 months or a year.  We ended up paying for full time care but I only work 30 hours a week.  Not ideal financially, but we really like the center and her teachers.
  • I cant find it either.  Im in Columbus OH.  My boss just told me i could go down to part time or maybe just have a day off a week - but i cant find a daycare that will do that!  I have to pay for the full week.  :(

  • For the first year DS was in a daycare that we paid full-time for and he was only there 15-25 hours a week.  I just switched him to in-home and I pay by the hour now.  I only found 1 center that would do part-time but because of our schedules we couldn't make it work.  GL!
  • When I was touring daycares, it was mixed.  Some did offer PT for infants, and others it wasn't a choice.  Luckily, I found a DC that offered PT and was also the DC I liked best.  However, it costs more for PT per day.  I pay $150.00 for three days, the cost for 5 days is $190.00.  So even, though it was available, the savings isn't that great.  Also, three days was the minimum.  I know Kinder Care offers PT for all ages, but their prices are high.

  • We have a nanny who works part-time.  They're out there!  We found ours through a placement agency.
