Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

1st Post-Op Appt?

What did you all experience at your first appt after a D&C?  What did your OB do and what did she ask?  Did your DH go with you?  Mine has a work meeting at the same time so we're trying to decide how important it is that he go with me.  TIA!

Re: 1st Post-Op Appt?

  • We met with several doctors after we learned that the sac was empty, but before the post-op appt, so I didn't feel it was that important for DH be there. My doc did an exam just checking the size and placement of ute and ovaries. She said everything was back in place and the right size. My appt was about three weeks after my d&e.  Other than that, she wanted to know if I had any out of the ordinary symptoms, asked about depression, and reviewed what they had said before. That we were cleared after on AF, that the empty sac was most likely due to chromosomal abnormality. She had the results of the testing on the tissue which were very general. Normal, "results of conception." She was glad that I had taken a home pregnancy test a few days earlier that showed up negative, meaning my hcg was low to zero so all the tissue was certainly gone.  She reassured me that even though I m/c, that we knew I could get pregnant. Not really much of a reassurance, but she tired.  That was about it.

  • I have my first post-op appt. tomorrow too and have the same questions you do.  I asked my DH to go with me for support.  He wasn't there when I found out about our loss and D&C so I want him here for this and he wants to be there too.  Also so when the dr. is explaining everything there is an extra listening ear.  I was wondering if my dr. is going to check down there.  I am assuming she is to make sure everything is healing correctly and to see if cervix is closing/closed.  I am still bleeding a little and I think that is normal (from OP posts).  I have a list of questions for her (ie, when we can start trying again, cause of this miscarriage, support groups in area, etc.).  I hope you get to hear the answers you want and you can begin TTC soon.  When is your appt.?  Let me know how it goes.  GL.

  • It's mostly a physical exam and Q&A.  I had a natural MC, no D/C, but mine did a vaginal exam and US to check how everything looked.  Mostly it was a Q&A about how I was feeling, physical symptoms, when to try again (3 months, FYI).  She encouraged me a lot emotionally - "don't blame yourself for anything", "this is very common", "women usually have normal children after a mc".
