I was up stupid early this morning and the only thing on was "Julie & Julia."  I had forgotten that Julia writes all those letters to her friend, Avis.  It got me to thinking about the name and it turns out I actually like it.  (DH and I always refer to our kids as "our birds" and the Avis is actually Latin for bird.)  It's definitely old-school, which I know not everyone loves.  Thoughts?

Meh, it's so close to the uber-trendy Ava that I'd steer clear of it, personally.  Plus here in Canada it's a well known rent-a-car business, so it's pretty tied to that in my mind.

We have friends with a baby girl named Avis.  It is a family name on the mother's side.  I think it's pretty.

My first thought was the rental company too, but it is a pretty name.

What about Iris, Aviva or Avril instead?

I think it's pretty cute as a name, but unfortunately Avis is one of the 5 biggest car rental chains in the US so I have to say I disagree with you forensic.  Unless they go out of business or DD lives in a small town and never travels her entire life she's going to meet quite a few people who are only familiar with it as a rental place

Kanye West mentions it in his song "Jesus walks"- "A trunk full of coke- rental car from Avis My Mama used to say only Jesus can save us!" I always think of that line when I pass an Avis! lol! It's not a small company....
