Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Genetic Testing?

Hi everyone.  Sadly I'm new to this board.  Went to the doctor on Thursday for my first appt, and there was just a mostly empty gestational sac.  Went in for my D&C yesterday.  The doctor told me she thought it was probably a chromosomal issue, but that I could get genetic testing if I wanted to know for sure.  I already had one healthy, full term baby (now 15 mos), so at first I declined the testing.  But then the more I thought about it, I thought maybe I could slightly relax a little more if I get pregnant again if I knew I just lost this one because of a chromosomal issue and not something that is likely to recur again (although I know I'm kidding myself to think I could ever relax again with a pregnancy).

Anyway, I'm just curious if others did genetic testing, and if you were glad you did.

Thanks!

  • We had genetic testing done with our second loss and are currently waiting on the results of chromosome analysis with our third loss. If your insurance covers it and your dr is allowing you to get it done, I would recommend it. If nothing else, its just additional information for you. Looking back, I really wish my dr would have offered testing on my first loss so we could determine if all of these are related or not. I really hope you dont have any more losses, but I think its good to know just in case. Good luck!

  • First off, I am so sorry about your loss.

Our doctors aren't actually genetically testing our losses but are testing us. I just went in yesterday for the blood work and am waiting for the results. For me, I have mixed emotions about it. I want to know why I've had 3 losses but I also don't know if I am prepared to know exactly what they may find. Either way, I will never be able to enjoy the first trimester of any of my future pregnancies. I hate that that has been robbed from us

  • I'm sorry for your loss.  Welcome!  I did not have any testing done this is my first MC (hopefully only) and it was a missed MC.  I am supprised they are offering testing after one but glad for you, I would get it done if they are offering it and you have good insurance.
