Baby Names

August?

This name was one DH and I agreed on, although it came out of the blue and we haven't really discussed names much yet.  He comes home tonight and says that his employees thought it was a girl's name when they first heard it, so now he's thinking it might not be the best name if we have a son.  Since DH also thought it was a girl's name when he first heard it I will admit I have had some reservations, but otherwise really like the name.

FWIW, Augustus and Augustine are not contenders.

Since I can count on this board for honesty, do you think August is girly?  Sure, he might have a nn of Gus or Auggie, but we didn't want to push a nn either.

Re: August?

  • I love this name and don't think it is girly at all. Although I guess traditionally month names are for girls.

Unfortunately my DH did not like August, nn Gus or it would be on our list.

  • I think of the playwright August Wilson, so I definitely associate it with a boy. I think its cute. Its on our long list for boys but FI doesn't like it.

  • I've always loved this name!  It's definitely masculine in my opinion.  I've NEVER heard of a girl named August, only guys.  DH doesn't love it or it'd be on my list.
  • I do not like it at all.  Boy or girl name.

  • I like August.  I also have heard July as a boy name too, which I also love.  What about Angus?  I have a friend who named her son Angus, and at first, I couldn't get over the beef cow association, but now it fits him so well, and I love it!  They also call him Gus a lot of the time.

  • When I see August I think Boy, and not girly at all. But that is because I know a little boy and another one with it as a MN.

  • Honestly, at first I did think it was girly because the only time I'd heard it was for Garth Brooks' daughter but I don't think it's feminine what so ever any more. I think August is really handsome!
  • I love it... DH doesn't though... I think August and Evelyn and cute sibling names... In the new USA tv show Covert Affairs, one of the main guys name is Auggie, short for August... :)
  • I like it!  I have a friend with a little boy named August, and they nn him Gus, and he's adorable.  I also know someone in his thirties named August, and he doesn't have a nn.  Respectable name & I like it.

  • I immediately thought girl name b/c it sounds feminine but I could see it either way honestly.

  • The only August I know is a girl.  Her sister's name was April.  Not kidding.

Me either, but then again, my taste in names is very traditional.

  • I think August is all boy, not girly in the least.  DH is not a fan, but I really like it!
  • It's all girl to me.

  • I love August (and nn Gus)! I prefer it out of all of the August- names as well.

It is definitely a boy name, so I wouldn't let people who think it sounds a little feminine prevent you from using it.

    I'm confused.

August is, in fact, a very traditional/classic name.

  • I don't care for August at all, and I don't find it particularly masculine.

Maybe traditional wasn't the right word for my taste in names. Some of my favorite names are Liam (DS's name), Noah, Owen, Ava, Abigail, Sophie, Olivia, maybe my taste is more common, popular names? I've always just called my taste in names traditional, but maybe that's not the right word.

Agreed. It is a very classic boys name. I think of the August Busch family-- although I am originally from St. Louis, so that is probably why.

    Great name!

  • This baby will be August if he's a boy - I love it!  We'll call him Gus for short, although my great-grandfather was called Auggie for short which I also think is cute.  I never thought of it as a girl's name at all, and I consider it to be a strong, traditional name.

  • It's a great boy's name; not at all a girl's name. Anyone who thinks that has no clue what they're talking about! I think you'll find that most people know it's a boy's name.

  • I love it and I only think of it as a boy's name. I was trying to push for it with MH but he didn't like it.
  • Thanks for the feedback!  Basically it's echoing what we're hearing IRL too.  Still on the list, but the search continues!
