Best first cup? Sippy or not?

Hi ladies,

DS is almost 8 months old and I'd like to have him start playing/practicing with a cup.  We BF and haven't used bottles, I'm wondering what the best thing to start him with would be (we'd try water or BM).  Sippy cup?  Cup with straw?  Regular cup?  Any advice or links would be appreciated!  Thank you!

I'd say sippy or straw cup.  You can try a regular cup too but my guess is it will be much harder for him to really drink from for a while - and in a few months, it will be important that he's drinking enough water as his solids intake picks up.  Plus, sippys/straw cups are the way to go for on the go ;-)

I have always preferred a sippy cup...my favorite that I have been using is the "Tommee Tippee Sippy Cups".  They have a little "lid" that can be flipped over the spout for when not it use, which makes it convenient for 'on the go'.

 I have also with both of my girls, give them a small cup with a tiny bit of water to 'practice' from a cup over time.

i don't like sippies because i figure why introduce something you're just going to have to take away eventually anyway straws are a 'life skill'. we have the gerber graduates cool twisties, and i really like it; it is a b!tch to clean, but dd does great with it! we also tried holding a cup for her and having her drink, but she would drink it all real fast and then get mad when it was gone. for whatever reason that doesn't happen with her straw.
