Is a blood test ever wrong?

My dh and I have been trying this month to get pregnant again.  I had to go to the ER last Monday and before they gave me medication, they ran a pregnancy test on my blood sample and it was negative.  My period was supposed to start yesterday and I was just wondering (hoping) it could be wrong??  How far along do you have to be before it is positive?

I'm not sure, but the test wasn't wrong.  Oh well, back to the drawing board..
