Yup, me too. I haven't been on here in awhile, and just saw that Mrs. G got screwed over by work (I'm SO, SO sorry). And who else, NewMrs07? Now me, too.
I'm a research scientist funded on soft money, meaning when I have a grant to fund my research, I have a paycheck, and if I don't have a grant, no paycheck and the University owes me nothing. So, we just got word that the last 2 proposals I submitted won't be funded (in part due to the budget and an administration that doesn't like funding basic research doing what it can on it's lame duck way out the door). And I won't even get into the last proposal that I wrote that didn't get funded, after which, the people who made the funding decisions faced congressional hearings and indictment for misappropriating research funds. I have another proposal due in 2 weeks, which, if for some crazy reason it gets funded, would not start until July.
Now, if I knew it were getting funded, this would be great maternity leave timing (except for the part that I have over 200 personal hours banked and no grant to pay them to me), being out from November to July. But there are no guarantees about July, and so I'll likely spend the kid's second month of life frantically writing grant proposals to try go get more funding in the 2009 funding cycle for the following October. Yay.
But, congratulations to the new BFPs, because really, that's a whole lot more important in the grant scheme of things!
And I continue to think of everyone on this board and send happy baby vibes your way all the time!
