Preemies

Preemieparent!!

It worked!!!! I didn't have a low table available, so I turned a laundry basket upside down and put some of their favorite toys on it. They both stood up the first try, with just a little poke on their butts. Now they want to stand all the time!! They aren't very strong, and they haven't quite figured out how to pull themselves up, but they are very, very close to doing it.

THANK YOU!!!

Re: Preemieparent!!

  • Yeah!!!    You are so welcome.  I'm glad that it worked.  The laundry basket is a great idea.

Seeing the (adorable) picture of them in the crib reminds me - the crib is a great place to encourage pull-to-stand.   Although the mattress isn't as firm as the floor I think kids like how easy it is to grab the bar at the top.   You can use this option for showing them how to squat and then pull up again.    My daughter loves standing in her crib.

Here are some options for cruising once they are ready:

Use a couch - if the couch is too high with the cushions than you can take them off for cruise practicing.  Put some toys on one end and then encourage them to get them.   If you hold their hips and gently shift their weight it helps to get them to move their leg.  For example: if you want them to go to the left than gently shift their weight to the right so that they can pick up the left foot and move it in the "left" direction.   Once they move to the left than you can shift in the other direction to get the other foot moving.    You might not need to do the weight shift - some kids just get it right away.

Once they have figured out how to cruise on the couch (or a coffee table) you can put several items close together to encourage cruising between objects.  For example - if you have several laundry baskets (or things of a similiar height) than you can put them close together but not touching so that they have to figure out how to correctly shift their weight and move their hands to get to the next thing.   Dining room chairs work well for this too (you can put them together to encourage end-to-end cruising also).

    Have fun with your superstars!

  • Woohoo!!!!  Congratulations!
