Nursing to sleep and biting

OUCH!!!

DD has always comfort nursed to sleep and while annoying that she won't go down any other way (she hates to be rocked), it was easy & fail safe. The last 2 days however she has begun biting during nursing. Thankfully she has no teeth yet...but man do those gums hurt!!

She bites down when she is not actually eating...just comfort nursing or playing. During the day it is no biggie because I can just unlatch her as soon as I noticed she has stopped gulping. Nighttime is different though because that's when she falls asleep...during the comfort part. If I unlatch her she wakes up, roots around, and starts screaming. We are back at square one!

Anyone have an idea how to stop the night biting? Could this be teething (no other signs though) and just go away soon?

Re: Nursing to sleep and biting

  • Ugh, I'm not sure I'm any help here but we are going through the exact.same.thing. since Sunday.  My DS is cutting one of his upper teeth right now which is what I think is provoking this.  We went through the same thing when he got his lower teeth.  OUCH.  For us it is definitely teething.

Anyway, during the daytime, I've been sternly but calmly telling him "No biting Mommy", unlatching, and setting him on the floor and ending the session (provided he's done eating, which he usually is and he's just comfort nursing at that point). We went through this in November and it definitely stopped the biting after a couple days.

And at night he generally nurses to sleep but with the biting again, I've still been telling him no and ending it, so we've had a rough few nights of getting him to bed because I'm ending it before he gets to the sleep stage.  My DH has been a saint though and has been wrapping him and walking around the house the past 3 nights because this is the only other solution we've found that works to get him to sleep.  He hates to be rocked too.  Oh but I haven't figured out a solution for the middle of the night, I usually just deal with it because I do not want to walk around the house at 3 am!  Hope your LO gets through this phase soon.

  • Same here but DS has two bottom teeth.  OUCH!  I jam the paci in his mouth (he HATES it) but will suck it if I MAKE him.  So if he bites the paci he's done nursing.  If he sucks the paci I will let him nurse.  So far it's worked well.  I do this mainly in the middle of the night.
