Postpartum Depression

lexapro vs celexa

I have been on lexapro for the past month and it has worked really well for my post partum anxiety. I switched to celexa 2 days ago because lexapro was not covered under my insurance. My dr told me that the 2 medicines were very similar. I had no side effects from lexapro and took very well to it. Since beginning the celexa I have had a headache and been extremely nauseus. I also had my first anxiety attack tonight since beginning the lexapro. I'm afraid I am not reacting well to the celexa. Any experiences like this? Thanks in advance!

Re: lexapro vs celexa

  • I had the same thing happen to me when I was switched from zoloft to celexa. After about 2 weeks it started working really good & I have been really pleased with it. I did go back to my dr and got a short term anxiety pill to take whenever I felt like I was going to have an anxiety attack...lorazapam I think is how you spell it. It helped me get through til the celexa kicked in. Hope it gets better for you :)

  • That's weird. I've read they're chemical makeup is almost identical. Maybe there's something more in Celexa and your body isn't used to the change. I tried Celexa too and had the same side effects. They switched me to Zoloft but I haven't started it yet. My doc said you can take it at night to avoid some of the side effects even though it can cause insomnia. They just took me off of it though..I'd let your doc know.

  • Hi-

I've been on both medications.  I cannot remember the exact reason why I stopped the lexapro, but I have been on celexa for about 2 years.  I tried weening myself off the celexa before getting pregnant (under a physician's supervision) and went through the most dreadful withdrawal EVER.  Once I was completely weened off the meds I felt great for a couple of months until I started having panic attacks.  I am not saying that celexa causes panic attacks, but I'd never had them quite so bad before.  I am now back on the celexa (while pregnant) and I feel so much better.  I know about the headaches you are experiencing, but they will eventually go away.  The thing you need to worry about is if you decide to ween yourself off.  The headaches will be much worse than the ones you are having now.

  • Thanks for the responses...I actually went back on the lexapro today; got it worked out with my insurance and I feel better already! Guess for some reason the lexapro just works better for me.

  • I was on zoloft (didnt work) the prozac (made my anxiety thru the roof) then he recommended Lexapro but my ins didnt cover so I did the celexa because he also said it was the almost same make up. Luckily it worked on me right away but everyone is affected different. I also take clonaxepam as needed and that helps. Hope u feel better soon
