Birth Stories

happy birthday!

The day before my due date I had a doctor's appointment to check things out.  At that time I was 2 centimeters dilated but the baby was still very high up.  My doctor told me not to expect anything soon.  Because I had GD she scheduled an ultrasound and a non-stress test for the following Tuesday, 5 days away (and not to my knowledge she had scheduled an induction for the following Thursday).

I went to work on Friday, my due date, and my co-workers gave me flowers and a little gift for the baby.  I told them thanks, but I was really going to be embarrassed when I showed up to work on Monday still pregnant.

Over the weekend I just did normal stuff.  Visited my mom, went for walks, watched sports on tv with my DH and friends.

The last couple of weeks of my pregnancy I had difficulty staying asleep.  I'd be up every couple of hours and wander around, watch tv or have a snack.  For this reason, I had driven my husband out of our room and into the loft above the garage, which is a separate building.

After going to bed late Sunday night, I woke up, as usual, early Monday morning - around 1:30am.  I had a snack, watched some tv and went back to bed.  Around 3:30 I jerked up out of bed as I felt something wet between my legs.  I went to the bathroom expecting (hoping) to see blood, but there was nothing.  I thought maybe I had wet myself, so I put in a pad and went back to bed.  10 minutes later the same sensation hit me.  I went downstairs to the office and googled 'water breaking' as I wasn't sure if my water was breaking - I hadn't discussed it with my doctor.  While I was googling, my water broke, big time!  It gushed out of me as I ran to the bathroom, leaving a trail on the floor.

So there I was, sitting in the powder room, using a towel to keep myself dry and trying to figure out how to alert my husband.  I decided to call him using a cell phone.  I dialed our home number and listened to the phone ring.  It rang until the machine picked it up.  I waited a minute and called again.  This time my husband picked up the phone and said hello.  I said hello.  He said "oh, you've got it" and hung up.  Jesus!!  I called back.  I kept saying "it's me calling, I'm the one who's calling" - he was so dopey due to the hour.  I finally got my point across and he came over to the house.

I called the hospital (small town, only 2 delivery rooms in the hospital) to ask them how busy they were and what to do (I had no contractions or pain at all to this point).  They said to expect contractions to start within the hour and if they hadn't begun by 7am, to come into the hospital.  First contraction was about 4:30am.  They were 45 seconds long and 5 minutes apart right from the beginning.  I took a shower and tried to relax (right!).  At 6:30 I woke my husband again and told him I wanted to go to the hospital - my contractions had suddenly become much stronger.

They checked me out when I arrived at 7am and told me I was 2 centimeters dilated.  Big deal, I was 2cm 4 days earlier.  By 10am I asked for pain relief - the contractions were very strong and I had little break in between.  The doctor came to administer the epidural and as I was moving into position, I felt a strong urge to push.  I didn't say anything to him though.  The needle was inserted easily and didn't hurt.  They checked me out immediately after and told me I was 10cm.  Rookie mistake on my part!

The sensation to push was still strong and I pushed for almost 2 hours in various positions.  I ended up squatting - the best position for me.  I saw a nurse bring in a vaccuum thing and I thought to myself - NO WAY.  I think within 15 minutes of seeing that vacuum device I pushed my beautiful 8lb 7.25ounce boy out at 12:33pm Monday afternoon.

I had quite a few stitches and was very sore for a couple of weeks after.  Had I known I was fully dilated I think I would have passed on the epidural.  I'm sure I pushed for at least an extra hour because of it.

No drama and an excellent result.  From the time my water broke to delivery I was 9 hours.
promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
