Hi ladies-
First up we are so in love with our baby girl. Being a mum is so amazing BUT not easy! I also want to say that everything in this story is based on our experience so i hope you find some of it useful
Alyssa was born via C section weighing 6lbs 12oz, 18.5" long. She's a beautiful baby. I am breast feeding and she is sleeping 2-3hrs after each feeding which has been wonderful.
I'm 4"8 and very petite...size 10 kids clothes so we were all not surprised that i delivered by a C section but i wanted to try doing it vag first.
The recovery from the c has been great. Apart from not having a bowel movement for 6 days post surgery and BAD gas pains...i am doing great...BUT i have been religiously taking my vicodin and ibuprofen!
Also its almost impossible to sleep as the nurses check on you, the drip is loud and the BP cuff goes off automatically!
I am currently breast feeding and to be honest this has been the hardest part of it all. For a 1st time mum its painful, frustrating, tear inducing and an emotional time for me, DH and Alyssa. The latching, waiting for the milk to come in was heart breaking, then the engorgement pain has all been very hard. BUT we are dedicated and now its getting much better and totally worth it!
Get help early on and this is so hard when in the hospital because you will be overwhelmed with baby, exhausted recovering from having a baby and feeling pretty overhwhelmed with emotions both good and bad! I visited the lactation center at the hospital 2 days after going home and i'm so glad i did because now i can retain the info!
We did supplement using 0.25Oz-0.50z when in the hospital because she was so hungry and i couldnt bear to hear her cry so much!!! She was starving! This has not slowed down my progress with the breast feeding at all and i'm so glad we did it!
The engorgement pain for me was terrible- like fire coming out of my nipples then horrible horrible chills where i would be so cold i would shake uncontrollably. The pain nearly made me faint! I relieved it by pumping 1oz from each breast and havent had the pain since!
Also cluster feeding is exhausting and painful but Alyssa is doing very well and so far my nipples are raw and sore but not bleeding or infected!
Birth story:Jan 30th 6am-7amI was 40 wks and 4 days pregnant on Jan 30th our induction date. We arrived at 6am, received Pitocin to get things going at 7am. I got the IV and was hooked on the BP and fetal monitor. At that point i was 2.5cm and have been 2.5cm for the last 3 wks. I was 90% effaced but she was still high in my pelvis.
Contractions came but were not painful. If you are having an induction- have a fantastic meal a head of time cos once you are admitted its only ice chips. I couldnt even drink a glass of water...just sips of the ice water. Trust me after a few hrs you are starving and dying of thirst!
1pm-3pm
The nurses came and did 3 internals from 7am-11am. These suck as they were so uncomfortable and hurt so much i dreaded them. They tell you to relax but its so hard! I dreaded these. by noon i had not dilated any further...baby's heart rate was great and i was comfortable but hungry and thirsty. But i was still not dilating any further. So we decided to break the water bag.
I had a lot of fluid and it gush out of me! It was like a huge big uncontrollable warm pee which kept going and going. NOTE- every little movement caused more fluid to come out of me! DH kept lifting me to drain it out and also to help change the pads but he seriously was really concerned about me being soaked. The nurses kept telling him to put me down...it was cute though! Everyone was surprised by how much amniotic fluid i had!
By now the contractions did intensify and after 2hrs i had a bloody show.
5pm-7pm
The contractions were getting stronger but it was not that bad and by 5pm i was 4cm and Alyssa was still -2 station and not going anywhere. We shifted me back and forth but at one point her heart rate dropped and stayed low we all freaked out!
So my dr came in at 5pm and we decided to get the epidural and we talked about the C section. For me the epidural experience was not bad at all. There was a lot of pressure but the anesthesiologist was so fast and my contractions were not killing me yet. I could either labor for the vag which may happen at 9-11pm (1cm dilation per hr) or get the c. If i waited then i would have been on the drugs for longer and also in labor for longer and it may stress my baby out more and the potential for a C was still high for me so we decided to just go straight for the C section and save me and the baby stressing!
7pm-9:30pmM
y C section was scheduled at 7pm. By now i was glad to get the C because i was so exhausted and seriously doubt i could have pushed effectively if i had to do it then!
The surgery wasnt bad at all- i spoke to my husband, the nurses and dr and Alyssa was born at 7:32pm.
The worst part of the C section was the uncontrollable shaking and i was so cold. I wouldnt stop shaking for over 1 hr despite getting something for it. I was also starving and thirsty but at least i could drink. We were in recovery for close to 2 hrs waiting for me to stabilise.
The following morning i had my first meal. TIP here- take it easy and dont eat a lot at all. I ate only a bit and then puked it all up as the new nurses came in to introduce themselves to me!
I am moving around well and taking my drugs. The breast feeding has gotten better and is worth it.
Oh finally- that first night was hard as she wouldnt sleep at all! Thank god for the nursery hot line!
