TTC after 35

My RE appointment

Hi Ladies,

I went to see the RE this morning with DH. It was pretty much uneventful as I expected. I had filled out a packet of papers with medical history for both of us ahead of time. We talked about that initially with the nurse. We then discussed pretty much the same with the RE. She took a look at my charts which show ovulation by temperature shift. She gave me the "order forms" for CD3 bloodwork and lots of other bloodwork (but said do it all on CD3 so I don't have to get stuck twice). I have the form for the HSG to do between CD 5 and CD12 with an antibiotic script to take for the HSG appt.  They took some blood from DH, gave him his sperm cups with instructions to call the urologist to make that appt. RE did a physical exam on me (no ultrasound though).

I am 12DPO today with a BFN so I'm just anxiously awaiting AF to arrive this weekend so I can get these tests done ASAP!  At least I don't have to wait long, right? I timed that well!! Once we get the test results back, we will go from there depending on what the tests say. Doctor did not really get into "options" as she said not to put the cart before the horse-- get the test results first.

Thanks for everyone's support!

PS: I was there for about 1 hr 20 mins.

Re: My RE appointment

  • Yay! Feels good to finally get started doesn't it?

Yeah, the cyle day 3 blood work.... they set all these vials out and I was like how much blood are you taking? lol

Oh, a little advice about the blood taking.... there is a lot of poking going on so if you can't take the needle anymore, ask them for the butterfly or the baby butterfly. I just can't take the bigger needle anymore... Then she brings out this baby butterfly, the needle is thinner and doesn't hurt as much. Of course I have been doing this for 2 years so my veins have just about had it with needles.....

They never took any blood from DH and I always wondered about that.... I suppose they can find out a lot from the SA.

The HSG isn't bad either, my RE did it so fast, I was like oh, you are done already?

  • Glad your appt went well.  Hope your need for the RE is very, very short lived :)

  • That was good timing - hopefully you can get your b/w out of the way shortly and schedule the rest of your tests.  It's very normal for the RE not to speculate about treament until the tests come back - you'll have another appt where the RE goes over your results and lays out a plan.  Good luck!

  • Sorry to post twice...I forgot to suggest taking 600 to 800mg of Ibuprofen before your HSG, if you haven't already heard that.  It can cause of moderate cramping and pre-medicating with the Ibuprofen helps.  Mine took about an hour because my OB GYN had difficulty advancing through my internal os, so I was VERY happy I had the Ibuprofen on board!

  • Yay for an appt finally!

Sounds like things are moving in the right direction. I am sure it's a bit nerve wracking, but at least you will have more information.

best of luck! I also took 800mg Ibuprophen prior to my HSG and think it really helped. It's a very quick procedure.

  • Hooray! It sounds like an excellent start!

I just wanted to make a suggestion for when you go for blood work. I have had a thyroid condition for over 15 years, I get poked an awful lot. Have a small icepack with you or call ahead and see if one is kept at the facility. Once the needle comes out and bandaid applied, put the icepack on the area for a few minutes. It helps to keep the bruising to a minimum.

    Good Luck with everything!

  • Sounds like a good start! And its great you don't have to wait very long to get started on all the testing. Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

  • Glad you have that out of the way and can move forward.  I know when I went and realized all of the things I had to do and DH got off easy.  Howevery, he did have to get blood taken.  My RE would do anything until the tests were done.  We've been kind of unhappy with our fertility clinic.  Not as easy to contact the nurse as we were told it would be.  We kind of put off going to the RE during the holidays and are waiting to see what happens in the next couple of weeks.  Then, if nothing, we will continue with the RE.

Best of luck to you as your journey begins.

  • I just went to the RE the day after you. Luckily for me it was on my CD1, so I am all booked up for bloodwork and HSG. I am most nervous for the latter. Though if all looks open I am hoping that the HSG will clear out the pipes for a quick BFP soon after!. I got an U/S on my appt, and they took ovarian volume measurements for me. Gives some insight to ovarian reserve, so they say. So far so good!
