Fluid in ears but not infected? Zyrtec?

I brought LO to pedi because she has been sick with a cold. Pedi said she has fluid in her ears but they are not infected. She said we could try zyrtec to help dry it up. Has anyone's LO had fluid in ears without being infected before? Did you do anything to treat it? Thanks!

  • Our pedi said there really wasn't anything to do and that there are mixed ideas as to whether any allergy meds work. DD has had fluid in her ear since her 1 year appt and we are going ahead with tubes (she's also had 3 infections in the last 8 weeks) So that is our solution/treatment!

  • Oh I know the fluid issue all too well.  DS had fluid in his ears his entire first year.  Sometimes it became infected, but most times it was just there.  Zyrtec will dry it up temporarily but it won't get rid of it permanently.  If the fluid is just temporary and from a cold Zyrtec could help.

DS got tubes at 13 months because the fluid was always there and impacting his hearing-he wasn't babbling at all at 12 months,  If it's there constantly it's like hearing under water.
