Is there something I should be doing to help teach DD to sit on her own?

Maybe Im completely stupid, and sitting up unassisted is something that will just happen naturally.  But being a 1st time Mom...sometimes i feel like I dont know anything.  Like, am I depriving my DD of learning something new because i am not teaching her.  I know it might sound stupid but I really dont know.

  • we were using the bumbo seat for awhile but my LO is so chunky he just didn't fit. Now we put him in his highchair or we prop him up with lots of pillows. We don't practice sitting for long amounts of time because squishing his big belly causes him to spit up.

  • Whenever you need to pick her up from a back-lying position, don't just scoop her up.  Grab her hands and pull her into a sitting position first, and then pick her up from there.

Hold her on your lap and support her at her hips/thighs as opposed to her waist.  Let her sit up (as opposed to leaning against you) as much as possible.

As she progresses, put her in an unassisted tripod position for as long as she can manage it, with you there to spot her.  It will only be a few sconds at a time in the beginning, but she'll gradually start staying upright longer.

Once we really made an effort to work with B on this, she went from supported sitting to tripoding to full-on unassisted sitting within about 2 weeks, maybe a little less.

  • Interested in seeing the answer to this.  DS keeps trying to get out of the Bumbo and he tends to spit up in it.  He does fine in his highchair but hates being strapped in so he won't stay for long.  We work on sitting/tripod sitting with him and he seems to get it.  He just can't stay up for more than 10 seconds.

I hope he figures it out soon.  He is getting frustrated that he can't play with his toys sitting up.  We may have to try more pillows and the Boppy.

  • Definitely what scoutkate said. We didn't do all that, but it is sound advice. We sat with our legs spread out and DD in between them (both of us facing out) while she played with a toy. When she fell, we let her fall onto our legs instead of catching her. We'd leave her for a second and then sit her back up. That only took maybe a week of concentrated effort. Now I leave her sitting in a room no problem.

  • I'm sorry but I have to ask.  What does tripoding mean?  I'm so confused! :)

  • Thanks everyone for the advice so far.  Im going to try this.  When she is sitting on my lap, I have noticed in the last few weeks that she doesnt really like to just sit back, she tries to raise her body up to be sitting straight up so maybe she is ready for more of this.  I already let her sit on my lap and I just hold her hands and let her try to balance herself.  As far as sitting with her on the floor.  She isnt interested in reaching for toys yet.  But i will definitely try sitting with her and hold her at the waist.  Thanks again.

  • my son got a Bumbo for christmas.. the 1st few days he loved it, now everytime we put him in it, he tries to get out. He doesn't mind sitting in the highchair or on the floor, assisted. But he really doesn't like the Bumbo, arching his back, in attempts to lift himself out.
