choking when lying flat

My son chokes alot and it seems like he can't breath and he looks panic stricken. I have to lift him to a sitting position and pat his back. I am worried about letting him sleep all night in his crib (he sleeps in a bouncy now but it's in the crib).I really want to get them both out of the bouncies and into the crib at night. They do great sleeping in there during the day but i'm up and always checking on them. Night is a different story.

He is choking on his own spit and/or formula spit up.

Do you think elevating his mattress just a bit might help this? I'm so worried he'll choke in his sleep and aspirate (sp). If i elevate too much he slides down to bottom of crib.

Thanks!!

Re: choking when lying flat

  • Our kids didn't sleep in their cribs until 6 months+ (DS, DD is still not in her crib) because of choking. They were diagnosed with reflux and something else that causes their larynx to sieze, cutting off air flow. In any case, we slept them in these (DD still sleeps in hers)... Maybe something to consider.

  • My DS2 does that. It's so scary isn't it? He refluxes every time he lays on his back. Yes the elevated mattress has helped a lot. I also have a cool mist humidifier right by him b/c of the congestion the reflux causes. I haven't been able to figure out how to stop him from moving all over the crib but now it doesn't seem to bother him. I started adding oatmeal cereal to his bottles and I think that might be helping but I'm not 100% sure yet. Another option is letting him sleep on his tummy. I let them nap on their tummies during the daysince I'm right there. I know a lot of moms w/ reflux babies let them tummy sleep all the time.
