How do you clean your laminate floors?

We just put in laminate floors, and I was always under the impression that I could clean them with my steam vac.  According to the floor manufacturer, the place we bought them from, and several things I've read online, I shouldn't, and it will void my warranty.

Now, I know alot of people still do and haven't had any problems.  But I just can't in good conscience do it now.  So if you don't steam mop, how do you clean your laminate floors?  The swiffer wet jet says you can use it on laminate, but I can't see how that's any better than a steam mop.  BB&B sells a kind of laminate floor kit, but to me it looks to work the exact same way as a wet jet!  DH doesn't think we should wet the floors at all in any way, and I need to crawl around with a damp rag to wipe up any messes that don't sweep up.  Yeah, that's gonna happen.

  • I vaccum up all the junk and then I use the swiffer wet jet. Works like a charm for me. I have no idea what a steam mop is or does, so I can't advise on that.  The swiffer does not soak the floor and dries very quickly.  By the time I get to the end of my floor, the area I cleaned first is dry.

I would never let a puddle of water sit on the flooring for any large amount of time, but you can certainly get it wet!

  • My dh is the same way about moisture on the floors because he heard from someone how it can warp the boards....well, I'm guessing its a SOAKING and not cleaning it up so it soaks under the boards that causes that!  LOL

Sooooooo, I use the vacuum cleaner to clean it a few times a week...it has a hard floor setting.

Then once a week, I take a clorox wet floor mop?? Its not the wet jet, because I had a coupon and it was cheaper for this clorox one.....I have the little bottle filled with a vinegar/water solution and put a pad on the bottom.  Then DH takes the hard floor dry mop that we use in between vacuuming, puts a clean pad on that and follows me....I spray and clean, then he follows and drys the floor...I do it once a week.  Sometimes my oldest does the following with the dry pad...its like a microfiber pad so it soaks it dry pretty well.

  • I was using the Method squirt and mop almond floor cleaner with a microfiber mop which was working good. I had tried a Swiffer but it always left them streaky. I just got a steam mop so I'm using that now and LOVE it, so much quicker and easier. I don't really care of it ruins the floor though, we're ripping it up in a couple months anyway. ;) But I did like the Method cleaner and it smells great.

  • hmmm...I guess I didn't do enough research to know I shouldn't use a steam mop. crap.  For 4 years I mopped on my hands and knees because everything I tried left major streaks if I didn't immediately dry them.  Last month we bought a Hoover steam vac and it works like a charm on the hard surface! I would hate to ruin my sub floor, but I do HATE the laminate and would do anything to get new floors.
