Where do you get baby clothes?

We have 10 1/2 weeks until Grayson gets here and we have about 3 outfits for him. So far our list of things we need are: crib, sleepers, new diaper covers (we need at least 2-3 more) and those are all the real NEEDS. I'm holding off on buying a crib because I know he'll be in our room for at least 2-3 months, so I'm watching for sales and deals because we hope to spend around $100-$150 for another one. I've looked a little at the local consignments for clothes and haven't really found anything that we need for reasonable prices (most are about $1 cheaper than new clothes). Where do you shop for good deals on baby clothes? I'm skipping newborn and buying 0-3 stuff... ideas?

Re: Where do you get baby clothes?

  • I get 99% of her clothes from Just Between Friends and Divine Consign (local only) consignment sales.... the other 1% are either gifts or things on sale that are too cute I just "have to" have them :)

what I usually do is go on the last day of the sale when items that are going to be donated to charity are marked down 50-75%.  JBF only marks things down 50% but at Divine Consign I go at the tail end of the 50% sale, scour through the racks and hold onto things and then as long as you check out during the 75% off window you get the lower price :)  I got her several fleece footed PJs (carters, baby gap, circo) for the winter at $0.50 each this way! Most items/outfits I get are $1-2 each and for some of the more "expensive" brands like baby gap and gymboree I'll pay $3-4.  plus she is such a little peanut that she wears one size for an eternity before moving up the next so that's one thing we have going for us :) she is in size 12 months footed PJs but can still fit size 6 months onesies!

you won't get some of the higher end clothes on the last day but you can get a lot of your basics.... I did score some cute gymboree outfits at the last sale i went to, though, so you never know! use the link above and see if there is a JBF sale near you, i see 5 in wisconsin....

  • I have had good luck at the JBF sales too.

Most of Jack's clothes are gifts from the grandparents but I also buy him stuff at local thrift stores.  We have 3 goodwills in my town and all 3 always have really good stuff.  That definitely depends on your area though, I know I have lived in places with pretty crappy thrift shops (although I wasn't shopping for baby stuff back then...).  I think we have pretty high end donators and the nearby military bases help because the population is pretty transient and those families seem to hold on to less stuff.  When I'm in the donation line almost everyone is military (ID'd by the base access stickers on their cars).

  • also wanted to say - I haven't had good luck at consignment shops (overpriced compared to the prices at JBF when I can stock up) but I know some of them run promos to turn over stock where they put out tables of stuff for .25-.50 cents/item.  Maybe ask if they have anything like that.  It's not the season for garage sales, but I know some of my friends swear by that (same thing, they hit up some of the areas with a higher military family presence, so again this might be regional and not so lucky in your area) so maybe plan to try to do that this summer.
  • We don't have JBF here, but I have great luck at Goodwill. I've been to a few, but only one has a good selection of quality kids' stuff. So you have to shop around first to find your regular, go-to store. What I love best are the consistency of prices -- all kids' clothes are $1.99 each and books are 99 cents. I get Janie and Jack, Quicksilver, Gap, Gymboree, etc. at amazing prices!

  • I've also had good luck with thredup.com - you'll have to put some boxes together for the trade, so not sure if you are getting ready to part with some of Bella's clothes or not...

  • We don't have JBF here or any decent secondhand shops, so I get 99% of their stuff from eBay. You have to sort through a lot, but it can be absolutely worth it for the savings (I buy bulk lots and usually end up paying $0.50-$1 per item, even with shipping). We do occasionally buy new stuff if we only need one or two things - like an extra pair of pants to finish off their wardrobe for that season - and nearly always get PJs new, since it doesn't seem like many are sold on eBay here (go figure!).
  • I second JBF...we've gotten most of her clothing from there...like Jaime I go on the last day when almost everything is 50% off.

We also have Children's Orchard here and while most of thei clothes are pricey (even for used since they're Gymboree and stuff) I always get in on their "fill-a-bag" deals where you can fill a bag for $5 or $7. Always get a TON of stuff during those sales since there's no limit to the number of bags you can fill!  Looks like they have one in WI, not sure if it's near you or not.

Like Lisa said, you might also try LOTS on eBay (i.e. people selling multiple items in one sale) or look on Craigslist too.  But mainly, I love Just Between Friends for second-hand clothing, toys, and more...so convenient to shop there twice a year!

  • Where we get baby clothes...

    1. Gifts. Got a ton when she was born, incl many that were larger sizes. I have them organized and make sure to take them out when they are her size. We also get lots of clothes from her grandmothers! (i.e. whenever there is a sale at Bloomingdales, or a garage sale my mom went to where everything was 25 cents!)

    2. Wiggle Room, local consignment store. I stop by there every month or so to see what they have. I tend to buy at the lowest marked down price. Sometimes I find great deals! But lately, I've been trying to stay away because we have tooooo many outfits as it is.

    3. Children's Place has really great deals, I get coupons from them too. I love their baby clothes... I don't like their toddler stuff as much. Good tights tho.

    4. GAP also has really great deals... I was shopping for a friend there when they had the whole store at 40% off, incl clearance items. I got some tee shirts and l/s bodysuits for $2.50 each!!

    5. Macy's. They have tons of deals on the clearance rack, and then I get them even cheaper with my $10 off $30 and 25% off coupons. Dirt cheap and brand new.

    6. Daily deal sites..... Not as much anymore, but if I see something REALLY cute....

    HTH!

  • I get most of Mason's clothes on sale from Baby Gap, Janie and Jack, H&M and Nordstrom. I also love American Apparel's kid's line..so cute! We also got a lot of second hand clothes from my nephew and friends.
  • All of our clothes are mainly hand-me-downs...

I did end up getting some clothes from Carter's the other day though. They're having a clearance sale ($3.99+). AND here's a coupon for 20% off $50+, that expires today!

  • Craigslist is the bomb for baby clothes out here. I also go to goodwill & other thirft stores. I've only bought a few outfits for Ryan myself that were brand new and I got them from Target. They have some super cute and cheap stuff sometimes.

How exciting for you! I love the name btw!

  • another thumbs up for JBF.  I didn't pay more than $3 for any item of clothing there, and that was on the first day of the sale (not 50% off).  But most of E's clothes are hand-me-downs - love them!
