How much water are you actually getting daily?

I know we're supposed to drink a ton of water each day, but I feel like I'm rarely getting the 60-100oz (depending who you ask) that I'm supposed to get. But I feel like I'm drinking water and peeing constantly all day anyway! The past couple days, I've been really bad about it, and I think it's causing Braxton-Hicks....so today I'm chugging water like crazy.

Also, would you count decaf coffee in your count of fluids? I know you dont' count regular coffee b/c of caffeine, but maybe decaf? Not that I drink it all day, but I have my one cup in the morning.

Re: How much water are you actually getting daily?

  • I get easily 100+ oz a day, but I always drink a ton of water.

Do you have a thermos or larger container you can bring to your desk and sip from throughout the day? I have a 32 oz Nalgene container that I fill up probably 3 times a day and drink while I'm working.

I have a 64 oz mug that I fill with water every morning and drink throughout my work day.  I also drink a medium size glass of milk with dinner and maybe another medium size glass of water at night on top of that.  So in total around 80 oz. daily.   I try to stop a few hours before bed, otherwise I am up all night peeing!

I was looking this up today on Baby Center and they say aim for 64 oz of fluid daily including water, juice, etc.  I am going to confirm with my Dr. next week though.  I am not sure how much more I can take in without moving into the bathroom!

  • I do consider decaf drinks as fluids, but I get so much regular water anyway it doesn't really matter. I cant tell you how many ounces I get a day, I have no idea. But I cant get enough eater, plain water with tons of ice tasted so good tome right now I am drinking it constantly.
  • My understanding is that you need at least 64oz daily of fluid.  I rarely get 64oz but I'm trying very hard.
  • I get 100+ ounces of just water a day. You know how some people are snackers? Well I'm a drinker. I always have to have a drink in my hand or with me.

I worry though because I heard that too much water could also be bad for you. I don't know the exact amount or if it's even true.

  • ugh.  depends on the day.  usually i would say about 64 oz. for me.  but i think you can count other items like teas, juices, fruits, veggies, soups etc. towards your fluid count.  (so sometimes i make myself feel better by saying 'i didn't drink 8 glasses of water but that soup for dinner probably helped!')

There is an amount, I do not know what it is.  This past summer my grandpa actually had to stay in the hospital for 3 days because of his high sodium levels (I think) due to his high amount of water intake.  He lost his memory and we had thought he had a stroke.  He drinks a TON of water (and slam a bottle of beer in the middle of the night..hee hee) probably related to the medications he is on for his heart and things, but I never knew too much could be bad for you.  Granted, he is 80 something years old, so I am not sure how much would be too much for a younger person.

I have a Camelbak that I love that I think holds 25oz (I think). I tend to drink that through the day, then after work, have about 3-4 8oz glasses of water between getting home and bedtime. My decaf coffee, if that counts, is around 16oz. So maybe I am getting close to what I need. It just doesn't feel like it.

  • I have a 34oz bottle that I go through at least once in a day, plus I usually have several glasses of milk, and occasionally a can of Sprite or ginger ale.

I figure I am getting about 80 oz.  PP is right though, soups, milk, juice and decaf drinks all count. I think I read somewhere that an apple contains 5oz of water!  So I am sure stuff like oranges and grapes are full of water as well.

Just keep your sugar and salt intake low and that will help ward off dehydration as well.

  • I don't actually count how much I drink every day but I've always been a big water/decaf tea drinker and I can tell if I'm not getting enough.  I also keep a Sigg bottle at my desk and if I haven't refilled it by lunch and again by mid afternoon, I know I need to drink more.

As for what to count, I count any liquid that doesn't have caffeine...water, decaf tea (I love my ginger tea!), juice, milk, etc.  Also remember that fruits and veggies have a lot of water content so that counts too!

  • I haven't been monitoring daily, but I know I have had at least 45 oz already and it's still before 11am.  Fortunately I have a desk job where I can just keep a cup of water here and sip it throughout the day.

I'm a track and field coach so I've learned a lot about this topic.  Hyponatremia is when you drink too much water and you actually dilute your electrolites (mainly sodium) into dangerously low levels.  A normal person has to drink a lot of water to get to this condition (it often happens to endurance athletes who drink too much water and not enough gatorade to replace the salt they sweat out).  As long as your pee is still light yellow and not totally clear you shouldn't have to worry about drinking too much water.

Most of the time my pee is clear... so that's a problem??

I would count decaf coffee, even regular coffee as fluid intake so long as it doesn't make you pee every  5 minutes that you eventually have negative net on your fluid intake.

  • I drink roughly 32oz of water alone. Then between orange juice or apple juice, and milk I will drink probably another 20-30oz of fluids per day. So pretty close to what I should be drinking. I don't really keep track, but I know I'm really thirsty all day long and I'm usually chugging something liquid in the evenings. It's like nothing quenches my thirst good enough!

No, you should be fine.  Hyponatremia is very rare and hard for a normal person drinking throughout the day to get.  As I said, it typically happens to endurance athletes or to people that drink and enormous amout of water at one time (remember the girl who died from drinking too much water (or was it milk?? either way) in a drinking contest and died??)  As long as you are drinking throughout the day and not all at once you should be fine.  Signs of hyponatremia include a bad headache, dizziness, blurred vision, etc.  The normal American diet has enough salt to compensate for the dilution with water....you'd have to deplete your salt AND drink too much water to really have a problem.

    HTH :)

  • I drink water all day long, consuming over 64 oz. daily, but not sure exactly how much.  Water and milk is all I consume regularly.

  • I didn't realize how much water I was drinking til I read this post and thought about it.  My bottle at work is 1L (I forgot what size it was and just looked it up), and I probably fill it 2-3x a day.  Then at home I drink at least that much again.

I still feel really thirsty a lot of the time, though.

  • Depending on the day, but about 80-100 oz. a day.  I have a few waters throughout the work day, a CF soda at lunch, a juice (1/2 juice, 1/2 water) with dinner and then a big glass of milk as a snack after dinner.
