Anatomy scan questions... ?

We have our anatomy scan today in T minus 3.5 hours! I'm so excited I can barely contain myself (and nervous too ). We are planning to find out the gender if baby will cooperate, but as long as little one is healthy we are happy!

So, I am hoping we will have an ultrasound tech who divulges all of the info without me having to ask a million questions.. But, just in case we don't, does anyone have any recommendations on questions they asked or wished they would have asked?

Thanks June mamas! Geeked

Re: Anatomy scan questions... ?

  • Ours was done by a high risk doctor and she was great!  I'm not technically high risk but she did a sono when I was in the hospital in November  to rule out complications.

She went over the measurements of every major bone (didn't give us numbers, but mentioned they looked good), looked for cleft palate, at the kidneys, diaphragm, pointed out the 4 chambers of the heart, feet, hands, measured the circumference of his belly, examined his brain, spine, facial structure, and other organs that looked like light and dark grey blobs.  It was an amazing experience.   Don't be afraid to ask questions!

  • I don't, sorry!  Ours told us everything she was doing as she was doing it.  Basically what she was measuring and that it looked good.  The techs generally can't tell you more than that.  The results are sent to a doctor for interpretation so if there are any more details to be had, I'll get them at my next appt next week.

  • Our tech talked us through the whole thing and told me what she was looking at.  Since MH is a radiologist and knew the tech, she probably gave us more info than she's supposed to about the specific measurements and how everything looked!  After the attending looked at it, we got an email titled "cute baby" and the first line of the email said "Kiddo looks great!"  Not exactly the official report, but I don't mind the special treatment :)

Don't be afraid to ask questions if the tech says something you don't quite understand.  She was talking with MH about my placenta and my cervix for a bit and I wasn't understanding what they were saying at first.  I'm glad I asked because, while it turned out to be most likely okay, its something that will have to be monitored again so I'm glad I asked and know what's going on.

Hope everything goes well and that you have a fantastic experience seeing your LO!!

  • I have the luck of having my anatomy scan, and then my reg appointment right after one another. We go next week. But they were great when  had DS and I am using the same MD and he still has he same utlrasound tech.
  • How long does the anatomy scan usually take? I have the scan in conjunction with my 20-week appointment, so I'm just curious how long I'll be there.

  • My Dr told me it should last about an hour. (the ultrasound)  I too have my 20 week appt right after so I plan on being at the dr's office for quite awhile that day.

  • Thanks for posting this.  My scan is today too and I was wondering the same thing.  Good Luck to everyone having scans today.

  • Mine took less than 30 minutes but my baby was very cooperative in showing the necessary body parts to get the right measurements.
