OB's who VBAC?

Until recently I thought I had the greatest OB. She had been very attentive to me and seemed to be on her game. Now? I'm not so sure. I'm getting conflicting stories from her staff and the run around when I talk to her.

I've had 2 c-sections, the most recent was December 2009. My OB performed both c-sections and I had asked to VBAC my last birth and was declined on reason for 1% chance my uterus could rupture. I'm due at the end of March and have researched my situation to try and VBAC this baby. Now I'm told that my OB doesn't do them for women who have had 2 c-sections and they can't be sure of the integrity of the incision.

Do any of your ladies know of an OB who is pro-VBAC?

Re: OB's who VBAC?

  • I'm not sure what location you are in... but my Dr is in Clear Lake.  Dr. Geffery Klein.  He's pro-VBAC.

I'm not sure of his thoughts on a vbac after 2 c-sections, though.  I do believe it's pretty rare to find.  A friend of mine had a doctor up in Seattle that was willing to attempt as long as the baby was in a good position, so they are out there.

  • My OB is in the med center at OGA. Ivonne Smith. She does VBACs and actually prefers them when she can. However, you had to meet a set of criteria for her to do the VBAC. I was going for a VBAC with my 2nd and ended up with another c-section b/c labor did not progress. Whether or not she will do a VBAC depends on the conditions you had your other 2 in, you can't have GD or PreE or any other complications. But for a normal, healthy pregnancy she is definitely worth talking to.

  • I am up here in Ft. Worth so no help there... except that my midwife and I are hoping for a vbac but she said that a whole list of criteria has to be met in order for it to happen.  NO intervention...  go into labor on my own, progressing, no pitocin, etc. Oh and where your previous c-secs were also has a baring.

The stars have to align and the moon give a thumbs up... or it's going to be a c-sec.  They also said that a c-sec is more risk to the mom and the vbac is more risk to the baby.

After two c-secs... I would be worried about you guys... good luck though!  I hope you get the birth you seek.  :)

  • I am pretty sure Dr Cowan at Womans does VBAC. I think I saw it on her site. You would just have to check on if she does after two prior...I love her.
  • I had a vbac with Dr Hector del Castillo. I don't know if he does VBA2C though, but it'd be worth a call. I know Dr Juan Franco does VBAC and I'm pretty sure he'll consider a VBA2C.

You'll need to order a copy of your operative report from you c/s. You order it directly from the hospital, no need to talk to your old OB if you don't want to.

Also join the Houston-Galveston ICAN yahoo group. They have an active discussion board and have monthly meetings. They are a great source of information and support for vbacs. They do not archive their discussions, so I guess it's not a "board", but people respond quickly to emails.

  • My OB, Dr. Jonathan Espana at Women's Specialists, does VBACs. He is really great and very natural-childbirth friendly!

I go to her too. We were going to try for a VBAC with no. 2, but it did not work out.

At any rate, I had GD with my first pregnancy. She did not have a problem with doing a VBAC knowing my history. However, I did not have GD with my second (failed first test, passed second).

She seems very level about the whole thing. She will discuss it with you and explain what risks she'll accept and which she won't. I really like her frankness; she thinks things through in a way that I find acceptable.

(I spent 30 days on bedrest in the hospital and got to know her style pretty well. She is nice and very willing to discuss things in detail. Ask Viula - I'm a little detail junkie at times.)
