Sh!thead

Coming out of lurking ...

sha-teed as it is pronounced is a real deal name. Quite a few Haitian children at the school where my husband taught have this name. Unfortunate? Yes. True? 100%.

I wanted to post this since today alone I say 2 seperate threads where ppl are downright certain its fake. Let me assure you, its real.

  • Years ago when my mom was a teacher in Public School she came across a student with that name.... she swore it was a joke, or a misprint, but no, the poor girl will go through her life with that name.  Or at least until she's 18 and can change it herself... so sad

  • Why is it all of the posts swearing these types of names are true are never people who actually know the person with the name? It's always a relative, friend, friend of a friend, etc who knows the supposed person.

It is usually a friend of the relative.  DH is a close enough degree of removal that I'd be convinced.  Assuming OP is telling the truth, why would her DH make that up?

  • I've done a great deal of searching for this name on the internet. I've found several sources that claim it is a popular name in Pakistan, but this is the very first time I've heard of it being used in Haiti. I've never found definitive proof of either--no newspaper reports, baby name databases, or actual people who claim it's their name.

It should also be noted there are several men and boys on Facebook with the name(s) Shi Thead (and Shi Theed), but not one with just Sh!thead. I think it's likely that there are Pakistani families here in the States that are still using the name, but they're obviously choosing to spell it differently to avoid the social stigma.

What makes this name an Urban Legend is the stories that go along with it. You say your husband has met several little Sh!theads and I take you at your word; I don't think it's impossible. However, I do think there is a difference between individuals from cultures that have traditionally used this name and all the dozens of people who claim to know someone who has met/knows a Sh!thead here in the States.

Do you know that we have asked dozens of people to produce some kind of proof (anything official, even a photograph) that they know or have met a Sh!thead and not one can do it? I would even be willing to bet money you're not going to come back with any kind of proof either . . .

Until I see something to change my mind, all evidence seems to suggest Sh!thead is just another legend.

I'm just making the observation that it is never the person who has the name or actually knows the person with the name. It could be true, but I find it odd that it's always someone who knows someone, etc. I don't know why people make this stuff up. I guess they think it's funny.

ETA: Also, the people who posts the urban legend names on this board typically post and never return so that is a bit suspicious too.

  • Listen, even if there are children in Haiti who's names are pronounced sha-teed, they would in no way, shape or form be spelled sh1thead. That would not be a French Creole spelling. I think your H is quite the storyteller.

    Exactly what I was thinking.

  • It is not an urban legend. There are actually people out there with this name--in the U.S.-- spelled Sh!thead and pronounced Shi thayd. My mom is a child psychologist and one of her clients (a little boy) had this name. I know, I know, it's my mom and not me. But seriously, people, it's my MOM! She's a professional psychologist. Why would she randomly lie to me about this kid's name? She told me about this years ago ...
  • Ok, I can say that I personally knew a Shithead. I was an assistant director at a Girl Scout camp, and we had a girl enrolled named Shithead. I thought my director was pranking me. Well, when I met little Shithead (she pronounced it "Shi- TODD") I realized it was not a prank. Poor kid.
  • Until I meet one for myself I'll say that everyone is LYING! Haha, I can't believe that someone would be so stupid to do this to their child.
