Infertility

Back from lap/hyst...bad news and good news (sort of long)

I had my procedure on Thursday and am recovering OK. I'm still cramping and spotting but the thing that's bugging me most right now is the feeling like someone is poking a stick in my bellybutton and it's like nails on a chalkboard to me!

Bad news, they found moderate endo and uterine polyps. I think they found most of the endo on my right ovary, the ovary was stuck to my pelvic wall, so they removed the endo there. The uterine polyps were also removed. I'm hearing all of this second hand from my DH and mother so I hope they were listening closely! I have a follow up next Friday with my RE. Apparently he said we can do one of two things: we can move forward with additional IUIs to see if I can get PG to keep the endo at bay, or I can start on meds to clear up any remaining endo and THEN proceed with IUIs. Obviously I would like to use a PG as a treatment option but I guess I'll wait and see what my RE thinks is the best way to go. Do you know which meds they'd put me on to treat any remaining endo? I seem to recall someone saying this med had horrible s/e...

Good news, I've been ovulating on my right side for over 6 months now (and for all of my IUIs) so hopefully now that they've "set my right ovary free" we'll have a better shot of an IUI working. Also, I read the following on the Mayo clinic about the polyps: "Whether uterine polyps lead to infertility remains controversial. However, if you have uterine polyps and you've been experiencing infertility, removal of the polyps might boost your fertility. In one study, infertile women who underwent surgical polyp removal (hysteroscopic polypectomy) had much higher pregnancy rates ? 63 percent versus 28 percent ? after intrauterine insemination (IUI) than did women with uterine polyps who underwent IUI alone."

Something else I thought was interesting is that Tamoxifen (breast cancer drug) may increase your chances of uterine polyps...I've taken Femara for all 3 of my IUIs which is also a breast cancer drug...I'm guessing the polyps have been there since before I started Femara but I thought that was interesting tooHmm

CD1 is supposed to be on Thursday...of course that could change since my lap/hyst...I'm guessing I won't be able to cycle this month but I plan on calling them with CD1 anyway, guess we'll see what our next steps are then! I'm just glad this is over with and I finally have some answers.

Re: Back from lap/hyst...bad news and good news (sort of long)

  • I'm sorry that you had to go through all of that, but it is good that they found some answers and fixed some things. I also had a polyp removed, this past August. We are supposed to start Femara with our next cycle, and I was also concerned about the effect Femara may have on the endometrium (since Tamoxifen has a big effect). I asked my RE, and he said that Femara works differently with the Estrogen in the body than Tamoxifen, so it does not effect the endo the same way that Tamoxifen would. That made me feel a lot better about it!

I hope you have a easy recovery and get good news at your follow up! Rest up and feel better!

  • I think the drug you are referring to is Lupron (to treat endo). I did not go on it after my Lap (and discovery of endo).

Rest up! I hope this brings you your BFP :)

  • Glad all went well.

FYI: I just had my lap and your RE should make you (will most likely) make you wait to cycle until 6-8 weeks post lap so you can recover.  it is way to soon to try to get preggo this early

Yep-I agree with Lane. I went on Lupron for 4 months following my lap. I had my moments on it (headaches, moodiness, overall out-of-it feelings) but it honestly wasn't too terrible. I sends your body into a forced menopause. I have not yet gotten pregnant but am glad I did both the lap & lupron. Good luck-I am glad your surgery is behind you!!

  • They may put you on Lupron Depot to treat the endo. This is not the same lupron used for ivf cycles. LD stops your period, puts you in a menopause state so that no new endo can grow and the endo that is there will not be fed estrogen from your regular cycles. I didn't do LD until after 2 IUI's and 2 IVF's. I wish I had done it sooner in my IF journey. There are some theories that say LD helps express the beta 3 integrin necessary for implantation.
