Intro and question about bedrest

Hi ladies,

I am 31 weeks pregnant with twin boys. I have been on bedrest since 25 weeks for pre-term labour and mild pre-e. I was in the hospital for three weeks and was then released to bed rest at home. So far things remain stable and I'm thrilled to have made it this far (and hoping to make it much, much further). I have been having frequent BH since 20 weeks but they have improved slightly since I've been rest (just slightly though).

I have a question for those of you who are or have been on long term bed rest. Did you wear compression stockings or something like that to prevent blood clots? My doctor had me meet with a PT who gave me a series of exercises to do daily but I find that they bring on contractions so I'm hesitant to do them as regularly as I should so I'm a little concerned about the risk of clots.

Re: Intro and question about bedrest

  • I wore compression socks.  I was able to do some exercises, but still felt better with the socks.

I have the ones I used and an unopened pair.  They go by height and "typical" weight... I'm 5'4" 125lbs... if they would work for you I would happily send them to you!

  • I've been on bedrest since 20 weeks and at my OB's direction, have been wearing compressoin stockings every day to prevet clots.  Not the most comfortable things in the world, but they do seem to help and keep my legs feeling better.

  • congrats on surviving 6 weeks of bedrest - you are doing a great job.

I was on strict bedrest from 26w4d until delivery at 36w6d due to contractions and pre-e.  I did not wear the compression socks while at home, but they did make me wear them both times I was admitted to the hospital.

Are you able to get up and go to the bathroom?  I didn't really do exercises, but I was using the bathroom A LOT (since my son's head was pressing against my bladder).  Every time I did get up to go to the bathroom, I tried to stretch my legs a little bit.  I found that just walking to and from the bathroom helped a little bit.

I also would do a lot of ankle rolling while laying in bed, just to get some circulation going. I was told to do leg lifts as well, but those seemed to bring on the contractions, which also freaked me out a bit.

Good luck and keep up the good work!  Bedrest sucked, but in the end, it was totally worth it, and now it (almost) seem like a distant memory.
