Benydryl for 1 year old?

We are going to Mexico in a few weeks and our Pediatrician said I could try a little Benydryl for the flight but to test it out first because it could have opposite effect and make him hyper. So two questions:what effects did it have one your lo (around 11 months)? 2nd question I have only been able to find children benydryl that says under age 4 do not take. Is their a infant one I'm not seeing? Thanks girls :)

Re: Benydryl for 1 year old?

  • I was in search of the same thing a couple of months ago when we went on a 14hr plane ride with our 19 month old. I was told that basically we couldn't give him anything as he was under 2 yrs old and to use the old style sedative - warm milk.

However, whilst we were away he got a cold & I went to Walgreens & asked for Benadryl after looking in nearly every aisle for it! Apparently it has been taken off shelfs and is being renamed.

They had their Walgreens version of it - "Wal-Dryl". The pharmacist calculated the dosage he would need which was 1.5ml as it actually says not for under 4yrs on the bottle. It also says on the bottle - "Do not use to make child sleepy", but because he had a runny nose & sneezed constantly we used it (and only because the pharmacist did the calculations!) - so maybe give that a try? Honestly just giving him milk did work on take off for us, and with Mexico only being a short flight I am sure your LO will be fine.

Oh and we did use it a couple of nights before flying incase there was some kind of reaction and he was fine! Good luck, and have a great trip :)

  • hum, our ped said not to use it under two at all. He said it can make her heart race. Not sure if he was just telling us that since lo as a heart murmur. But I decided not to try it when she was having a nasty cold. She is over two now and he did not seem to have a problem with having us try it last cold. It helped her nose dry up quick and heart raced a little but was hard to tell.

I think on the place you would be using it more for than just to make your child sleepy right? Like helping the fluid drain from the ears and nose!

  • I gave DD benadryl when she had croup earlier in the year and it made her heart pound so hard and freaked me out so badly that I won't do it again.

I think we have CHildren's Benadryl but the bottle is in her room so I can't check at the moment. Bought at Rite-AId in November

  • Some kids get super hyper from it. Mine don't. The askdrsears.com site has a dosing chart by weight. The Childrens is the only kind. There's no infant drops. Everything now says over four because people were overdosing their kids so instead of making it easier to figure out the right dosage or put it behind the counter or whatever, they just changed the packaging to say don't do it at all. Total cover your ass move on the drug companies parts. Anyway I have given it to my kids at night when they had stuffy noses that kept them up. It has helped them. I've also used it once for Ben on the plane and I'm not sure it did much. But they also gave him some cocktail of benadryl and other things to chill him out before getting fillings and they still had to crank te gas on him like crazy so he might be somewhat resistant to that! :) anyway if your Ped said it's ok I'd believe him. I think it's ok too but I'd try it before the flight to make sure your kid doesn't get amped up. When Ben was at the dentist another kid also had thatsame cocktail and was running laps and talking nonsense. He clearly was bonkers. :) you don't want that on a plane!! Oh and in any event I think it's good to have benadryl on hand just in case of an allergic reaction of some sort.

  • I 2nd what Jill said. I would highly recommend everyone has some childrens benedryl in the house in case of an allergic reaction.  Before we knew Cruz was allergic to peanut butter it was our lifesaver when he started having a reaction, and we used it again when he had a reaction to antibiotics.   It makes Cruz hyper as well and we very rarely give it to him but I do if he has a really bad cold or an allergic reaction.
