How many IVF cycles would you try? (clicky)

DH and I agreed to try IVF again (if the new RE recommends), but DH ultimately said it was up to me.  Originally he didn't know if we should try again since he said it was hard on me.  I said it wasn't really that hard on me, and that I'd try as many times as he'd let me/we could afford.  But I'm curious, if you kept getting BFNs, how many IVF cycles would you try before giving up?

  • Somehow i got it into my brain that i would be willing to do 6.  No idea if a RE will go for that though...

  • I voted three, but only because we only have three tries covered through our insurance. If we could afford I would probably try more.

    Celine Dion did 6.

This is prob where i got it...and when i first joined here, there was someone who's insurance covered 6.

These things led me to decide it was a reasonable number for me.

  • We were just having that same conversation. I picked 3, because I do want to try one more time.  We've used our lifetime max and are now completely OOP so unfortunately that is influencing our decision.

DH does not want to do any more fresh cycles because I ran into OHSS complications with both cycles (and this time I had some scary trouble with my kidneys for a day) so he is afraid that we're just chancing my health if I do it again.

  • I vote Special Snowflake, because I really don't know.  Right now we're starting IVF #2 and at this point I feel like I'd be willing to do as many as it takes, but in reality that probably would have to be some point where if it doesn't work, we decide to move on.  Insurance covers 3 IVF cycles, so if need be we'll definitely do 3.  If those didn't work I would think we would try to do maybe 3 more if possible.

  • I said "as many as it takes" but this is only assuming money wasn't an issue. Financially, we can only do one more fresh cycle after this one.

  • My current insurance covers 4 unless you have a successful cycle (take home baby) then you can try 6 times for a sibling.... its worded something like that.  However, I'm probably only going to get to try 3 times with my current insurance, because we moved and eventually I'm going to have to quit my job and lose my coverage.  If I got a new and really good job, I would try to convince DH that we could pay for it oop, but I don't know if I'd be successful.... I'd probably have to get a really really great high paying job to convince him.

  • I voted special snowflake.  We've done 2 IVF's with no embryos to transfer... Sometimes I'm tempted to try that again but I really don't think I could handle it.

We'll try with ds and if it doesn't work and the RE thinks we still have a good chance  I might be willing to try that again.  If ds fails and he thinks we need DE and thinks that it might work without ds, we might try that.   A lot will really just depend on finances.

We can't start an IVF cycle until at least mid/late Feb and I really want to have a decision made about whether or not we'll pursue adoption by the middle of the summer.

  • I think 3. Our next one will be helped with insurance, I only have up to 11k, they pay half and I pay half, so I think I have enough for one more and I think I'd do one more after that just do know we were done. To think we weren't doing to go past IUIs.

  • I voted special snowflake.....we're finally cycling this month after three months postponing from of an insanely persistent cyst.  We're doing mini ivf so we won't be transferring anytime soon (unless we decide to just go for it) but it worries me I'll have to wait another however many months for only our second retreival because of another or more cysts.  I have a feeling its going to get really old really fast (because it already is and we haven't even begun).

In a perfect world, I'd like to do three ERs (over three consistent months) and then go for the ETs until we run out of frosties.  Assuming we get two embies at each ER, that would just be three ERs.  In a really perfect world, we'd already have those six frosties......

    TTC since May 2009 - DOR (ovarian cancer) DE w RBA December 2011 - transferred one embryo 12/14 - three frosties Beta #1 - 129 (12/22) Beta #2 - ? (12/26)
  • I voted SS. We did two full IVF cycles with my OE plus one more that was converted to IUI. Insurance would pay for two more, but we are both so tired of the disappointment, we decided to move to DE to give us better odds. We are in a DE guaranteed program that gives us six fresh cycles if needed, otherwise we get our $$ back. Would we actually go through six cycles? Right now, I would say no way, but we will see.

  • I said 5 or more because we've already done one, and I think insurance will cover 4-5 more.  If it doesn't happen in that many tries we will have to talk about our next steps.

  • We are doing cost sharing.  So we get 3 frozen, 3 fresh cycles in our payment plan.

  • We would try 3 with our insurance coverage.  If at that point, nothing has worked, we would look into something else-whether it be surrogate or adoption or whatever else.  Especially if we have good looking embryos and just no implantation.

  • I voted special snowflake because we are 100% OOP. We can pay for 1 IVF cycle a year, so I guess I would do as many as it takes as long as we can continue to pay for them.

  • I said special snowflake b/c I only a small amount of IF coverage on my insurance.  It will cover 1 round of IVF.  After that - we'd be OOP.  If there is some coverage left we may do some injects + IUI cycles, but IVF is what my RE is recommending at this point, so that is why we are going with that.

As far as OOP IVF, there is just no way we could afford it.  By the time we could save up I think my age would really be working against us (I am 37 1/2 now).  It's very sad that having a baby is dependent on what you can afford.  I realize I am very lucky to have any coverage at all, but it's a one shot deal.

  • I picked 4. My office has package deals so it's smarter to get one of those. I don't think I could emotionally handle more than 5 or 6. I kind of feel like if I don't get KU in 2011 then we will stop. But who knows.....I may start and feel okay to keep going. We'll see in a few months.

  • We did three and would have done at least one more, but we are completely OOP and the first three were distasterous (over 3 IVF cycles we got ONE SINGLE egg). The fact that the cycles were a complete bust made it easier for me to move on to DE. I think that there are many factors to consider.

  • I told MH that this would be our last fresh cycle with my eggs and his sperm but deep in my heart I know we will keep going if the dr thinks it's still possible for a pregnancy to occur. I voted as many as it takes. We are 100% OOP so that definitely would play a role in how far apart they would be though.

Sigh, I freakin' hate IF. More than that, I hate California and the lack of coverage we have here. :(
