DD stayed up this year (she'll be 10 in a few days). A lot of my friends have always let their kids stay up, mine are just really super crabby if they are up late so bedtimes are pretty strict here.
I don't think 8 is too young if mom is cool with it.
Nathan has been staying up for the past couple of years, he is almost 11. We let Kaitlyn and Allison stay up this year. Allison was out by 9:30, DH had to carry her to bed, Kaitlyn was out by 11pm.
We always attend a kid friendly NYE party at my friend's house and we've all been friends (kids and adults) for many years. All the kids have been allowed to stay up as late as they can or when the parents tell them it's time to leave!
My daughter is now 8 and we got home at about 1 am. She's been staying up until at least midnight for the past 3 or 4 years. One year we tricked all the kids and told them it was midnight when the ball dropped in NY, an hour ahead of us! They, of course, totally fell for it and then we celebrated again at 12. They were so mad at the time and still talk about that night to this day!
We just make sure we have a lazy day scheduled the next day; movies, relaxing and hanging out!
My DD was probably 7 or 8. She hadn't expressed an interest before that. DS, who is nearly 6.5, asked to stay up this year. We figured if he didn't get too tired and cranky, it would be fine. He made it!
Ditto the "laid back day" the next day. My kids are both generally in bed by 8:30ish and up by 6 am, so staying up until midnight is a special treat.
My 4.5yr olds and 5.5yr old all stayed up for the first time this year. It wasnt a big deal. They tok a later nap, i allowed them to sleep until 6pm. They got up we had dinner and then played wii, kinect and some games they got for Cmas. I also bought some snacks and allowed them to have soda. (very rare they get soda) They thought it was great to have snacks (cookies, chips etc) so late AND get soda. It was a really fun night and non of them got tired or grouchy. We took some pics at midnight and then we all went to bed. They slept in the next day and we didnt have them take a nap so they would be ready for bedtime that night. They are now back on schedule just fine.
This will probably become a tradition. Im not much on going out on that night. So many people out drinking so Id rather stay home with my dh and kids. We all had such a great time.
I let my 6 year old stay up to watch the ball drop - she was sleepy on the couch with me but she enjoyed it. There was no school or work the next day so it was no big deal imo.
