Parenting after 35

Constant crying

I don't know what happened to my cheerful toddler. For the past 2 weeks he's been very fussy and throwing tantrums for everything: putting him in the car seat, the high chair, the stroller. Right now he's overtired and in his crib and I have tried everything to soothe him but he's red in the face and crying inconsolably. When I go pick him up he cries even harder unless I put him down on the floor. I don't know if it's teething or something's bothering him. Yesterday he woke up from his nap crying too, when normally he wakes up all happy and playful.

I don't know if I should take him to the pedi, is this normal? He's very feisty and refuses to cooperate with anything, especially diaper changes. I'm seriously at my wit's end and feel like a terrible mother. Yesterday I screamed at him and felt really bad afterwards.

Are 16-month olds supposed to be this difficult or is it that he has some kind of problem? I'm so depressed right now...

Re: Constant crying

  • Teeth??

Charlie was that way all day on Friday.  His molars have popped out and I finally figured out that that was what was probably bothering him.  A little Baby Orajel and some aspirin and he finally calmed down.

  • Teeth for sure. Any sign of a slightly elevated temp? Like 99.5 or something like that? That is another teething indicator. If you can get him to open up (I flipped mine upside down) and look in there. Or if you are a brave soul stick a finger in there and feel around. Molars can be seriously painful teeth.

  • I'd say teeth. And I could have written this post myself. Between the weaning and several teeth coming in(drooling, chewing etc) M has been crying constantly over the last week. It's really freaking me out - not worry-wise, but it's nuking my nerves.

    Sorry for the hijack.

  • I agree with PP: teething most likely, but i would call the pedi just to be sure.

  • I'd say teeth and budding independance. Maddie started fighting diaper changes at 16 months too. It was like trying to diaper an octopus, a very angry octopus. She has gotten a little better.

  • I think it's definitely his molars. He has two that have been coming out for the past 3 weeks. They are halfway out but I think they still cause discomfort. He's biting on things and drooling like crazy. That day he was crying I gave him some Tylenol and that seemed to make him better, he finally took his nap and slept well. Poor baby, I guess those molars are painful!

  • Molars suck.

Aaron was crank monster with his uppers (been out for around 2 months) and now his lowers are breaking through and he has "moods".  He's not crying constantly like Adrian (poor boy/poor mama) but he has his moments.

And don't totally disregard toddler tantrums.  They happen well before a LO turns 2 (per my SIL1 and MIL).  Aaron definitely will throw himself on the floor and kick and scream if he doesn't get his way.  I just let him. I'm not sure what else to do. But it's frustrating.

  • While I am not an expert on teething (Michael has 0), could it be also the holidays have thrown off his schedule?  We have had people in and out of the house since before Christmas and I was off work for 10 days.  I know when I do not have a regular schedule I am rather cranky.
