Tell me what you think about...

..Diaper Genies and Wipe Warmers.  Are you getting them or have you used them?  Is it something I should seriously think about or just something else to spend money on?

Re: Tell me what you think about...

  • We didn't get a wipe warmer w/DD...I didn't want to get her used to having warm wipes all the time. We had a Daiper Genie but it broke and we did just fine without it, so I won't be replacing it for DC #2.

I think it's fine to register for these things, but you'll be ok if you don't get them :)

  • Everyone has told me not to bother with wipe warmers, so we won't be.

And given that my (adorable, darling, precious, I love her) effing dog can open doors, garden gates and her own crate, and has managed to get into our closed bedroom/closed closet/closed hamper to get to the dirty underwear, I'm thinking a diaper genie doesn't stand a chance. We'll be taking dirty diapers either to the (lockable) kitchen garbage or right out to the outside cans.

Which is a PITA, but the last thing I need is Scout feasting on dirty diapers, and I know she'll try.

  • Yes we are getting a Diaper Genie.  Our nursery is on the second floor and taking diapers to the outside garbage can would be a PITA.  Will not be getting the wipes warmer.  I don't really think they seem useful plus I have heard about the risk of bacteria growing.

  • Diaper Genie type product, yes.

Wipe warmer no.  I also don't want LO to get used to is, plus I have read they can dry out the wipes and become a fire hazard.

  • With dd we did not use either. With this lo we are still not using the warmer but are using the diaper disposal system. We are going with the munchkin / arm & hammer one.

  • I've been kind of thinking about a diaper genie just because of our dogs.  It would be nice to keep them in a separate area from where they are.  I'll probably just register for it and see what happens!!
  • We didn't get a wipe warmer - didn't see the point.  DD never seemed to mind the wipe straight from the tub.

We do have a diaper genie II.  I like it.  Never ever had a problem with odor.  We don't use it currently - I think we stopped when DD was about 10 or 11 months old.  He diapers were bigger and filling it up quicker and it just became a hassle to change it out - I just started throwing her diapers away in the kitchen garbage.  ha.  Plus I was tired of spending money on the refills.

I do plan on using it again for this baby tho.  It was conveinent and we never had a problem with odor.  The refills lasted long enough.  Even in the newborn stage - but that may have been because I changed quite a few of DD's diapers in the living room (where the pack n play w/ changing station was located) and would just throw those diapers away in the kitchen garbage.  I also EBF, so from what I hear FF babies' diapers are much stinkier so we didn't have that issue.

FWIW, my SIL has a diaper dekor and whenever I change DD's diapers there or change one of our nephews' diapers, and put the diaper in there - the smell totally wafts out - bleh!
  • We didn't get a wipes warmer, but we do love our Diaper Genie. Our garbage only gets picked up every two weeks and it's nice to have that double layered protection from baby poop!

  • We had the Diaper Genie 2, the refills are expensive, but I liked it and never had a problem with odors. (I've heard other people say they did) So I will be getting one again (we sold a lot of our stuff when we moved)

As for wipe warmers, my friend said hers dried out the wipes, so I never bothered with one.  The nurse at the hospital told us that they like to run the wipes under warm water before using them on the brand new babies, so we did that for about a day after we got home and it was just too inconvenient.

  • We didn't register for a wipe warmer because I've read many things about them drying wipes out before you get a chance to use them all.  We did register for a Diaper Champ.  We went with the Diaper Champ as opposed to the Diaper Genie because my friend said that with the Diaper Champ you can use regular trash bags inside of them.

  • Good to know about the Diaper Champ--the refills will be the biggest PIA I think. I'll have to look into it!
  • I had originally registered for a wipe warmer but took it off.  I had heard that sometimes they can get mildew, and if the lid is left open they dry out.  I thought they would be a great idea, but I just don't want my babies getting used to a warm wipe when we hope to be taking them out and about often and wipes will be cool, or room temp.  I think after taking a wipe out holding it cupped in your hands does enough to warm it up.

I'm not getting a Diaper Genie either because we are doing cloth diapers with the twins to save money.  I also dont like the idea of having a poopie diaper or wipe sit for several days in a pail that is meant to reduce the smell.  Why not just take dump the diaper pail every evening to reduce smell? I also will have the luxury of staying home for awhile and wont mind doing all this stuff.  I do say this now, and those words may come back to haunt me ... hehehehe
