Parenting after a Loss

Are you going to encourage your child to play an instrument?

Hey girls,

I am reading a book about how exercise makes people better at school and more relaxed and less likely to be depressed, etc. It also mentioned that learning to play the piano can make students better at other subjects as well, like math, because it challenges your brain to create new pathways and so on. So I'm just wondering if any of you have plans to enroll your child in music lessons of some sort. I wish I had learned to play the piano as a child and I'd definitely like DS to at least try it out.

Re: Are you going to encourage your child to play an instrument?

  • I would really like them to learn the piano... but right now we don't have one, so we will have to get one... hopefully next year we can see if she is ready for lessons (or maybe the next)  Our school has band/orchestra starting in 5th grade, so if they want to do that as well, that is fine.
  • Loading the player...
  • If she has an interest I will. I played the recorder and piano growing up. I hated my piano teacher and didn't want to practice. Now I wish I would've kept it up but I started dance instead.

  • I'd love to have her try out a musical instrument and see if she likes it.  I took piano lessons as a child, and while I didn't think much of them at the time, I look back and feel glad I took them.

  • DS is really showing a strong inclination towards drums.  He is captivated by the drummer at church.  Also, my brother is a musician and is home from College for Christmas break, and he brought one of those hand drum things with him.  DS loves it, and he also loved the drum with sticks that my friend has for her daughter.  If he continues to show interest, we'll probably get him lessons when he is old enough.  My brother is determined to make DS a drummer.

  • DH and his uncle are both drummers, BIL is a guitarist, SIL is a singer, MIL sings, I sing, my dad sings, my grandmother was a music teacher. And on and on. We definitely have a musical family.

I've always said that I want my son to play guitar at least, b/c if he plays guitar, he'll always get chicks. :-)

And if he'd like to play drums, too, that'd be fine as well.

  • Yeah, my dad, sister and I all play guitar at varying levels of proficiency. So I think I'll have Jax take lessons from a younger age.

I feel like had my parents started me on an instrument that I would have thought was cool I might have been more inclined to want to learn instead of teaching myself as I got older.

    So guitar for Jackson!

  • DH and I both play. We actually met in college marching bang (geeks I know). I play flute and sax and DH plays pretty much everything. I already told DH that Jack will take piano lessons and after that he can play whatever he wants.

  • DH is a guitar player.  Actually he can play any instrument he picks up.  If she shows interest in playing I will for sure encourage it!
  • Yes, for sure.  I am a musician and used to teach piano, so it's very important to me that they at least try it out.  All my kids will be required to study an instrument for at least three years, at which point they can decide whether or not they want to continue.

  • I think we will encourage it if it's something he shows interest in.  I played the recorder, piano and clarinet growing up.
  • This makes me giggle...I failed math many many many times but I was the principal cellist for a symphony for a few years in highschool and college...I actually still don't have a degree because of my math skills!

I play cello, violin a little bass and sing...dh plays piano and guitar.  We'll start the boys on pianoand let the choose after that what or if they want to keeo it up. I chose cello at 13yo and it's my first love...sorry dh :-)

We both still keep up the music at home so hopefully they'll love it too...and cats :-)

eta: my grandmother plays piano and had a scholarship for a piano ...but then she had 8 babies...still plays like a dream though!

  • Yup! I am a music teacher, so I will definitely encourage participation- but not force it.

  • I played the piano and I made my parents keep it and move it 18 hours to their new home so I could take it. I'm trying to freshen up my skills again now that I have it. When I play, I put Amelia in my lap so she can hit some keys. I hope she likes it and will want to take lessons eventually.

  • I work for a company selling musical instruments and private music lessons, and I have my degree in Early Childhood Ed.  Yes, I think it is valuable to learn an instrument.  Unfortunately, I do not earn enough money, at this point, to afford them.
