Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Average age for putting 3-4 words together?

If your LO puts multiple words together, when did they start? And what are they saying because I'm sure it's adorable.

  • Lovvvin the siggy pic!

AJ started a few weeks ago. It's not consistent, but probably 1/3 of what he says is more sentence like. My favorites? "What a mess!" and "Wow! What's that?" One I shouldn't love, but do? "what the fvck?" I really need to stop laughing at that...

  • between 2 1/2 and 3.  There's such a wide range of normal though...  DS is 19 months and is just starting to put two words together.  It could be 3, but a lot of times his words aren't clear.  uv oo (love you), err's by belbe (where's my belly), want gilk, want cookie, want nana, one, ooo, reeee (1, 2, 3)...Along those lines.  My oldest started puting 3 words together around 2 1/2 and was speaking longer phrases at 3 ( 5-6 words).  He's been about average in his speech development...
  • I don't know but I love your kid!

  • Typically LOs begin putting 2 words together around 18 mos-2 years old. It often starts once they hit about 50 words. DD just started using 2 words... usually it involves "hi ---" ("hi mama" melts my heart every time!!!) or "no ---" but she has repeated some other 2 word phrases as well.

Sometime between 2-3 years is when most LOs start expanding to 3 word sentences, and then of course 4 words would come next. However, like everything else, it varies from child to child.

  • DD has been saying 2 words together for some time like "all done" and "more cheese" etc. since maybe 16 mos., but just around 20 mos. started saying sentences like "daddy go shopping too", "moon up in sky", "barney on tv now".

  • No idea about the average age, but DS has been doing 3-4 words for a couple of months, and 4-5 words for the last month or so.

    My favorites are:

"Oh I think so!" (in response to my "Oh I don't think so!")

    "I love you more"

"Finny is so silly!" (he likes talking in the 3rd person)

  • Katiekate, I love toddler potty mouths, Its funny as long as it isnt my child! Thats a lie, I'd still laugh hysterically.

DD has been putting 2-3 words together for a while now and they seem to be along the same lines "Hi mama" "where daddy" "I want outside/help/banana/etc"

  • DD said her first 3 word sentence the other day. She said "I want it!" lol
